I need advice

I was in a serious accident one year ago and have since gained 60 pounds. I would realy like to lose the weight but because the accident caused a lot of damage to my right leg most of the exercises that I had done in the past will no longer work. I can only walk for very short distances and can only bear weight on my leg for short periods of time. Unfortunately walking was my primary exercise. So what I was wondering does anyone have any suggestions on what types of exercises a partialy disabled person could do. I have started swimming but that isn't practical everyday or in winter. I am really looking for something I can do in my home.

Have you tried pilates? It's really great and was designed for people with disabilities. I love it and am amazed at how well my body feels and moves afterwards.

I'm going to do a search for some iVillage boards for you; I'm sure there's one out there for exercising with a disability. Swimming is a good one- but like you said not entirely practical! Pilates is a another good idea.

I'd also think that 'diet' is going to be a key element for you; with limited exercise you should look closely at your diet to see what things you can alter and change.

I'll post back if I find any boards for you..........

Here are some links you might find useful-

Pain Issues Support (board)
http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhpainissues

Pain & Arthirtis (info page)
http://pain.health.ivillage.com/

Health Boards (there's a list of chronic pain boards close to the bottom)
http://health.ivillage.com/messageboards#6qswb2kv

I'm only suggesting these links so as you get information on not only what will work, but that is coming from people in the know about that sort of thing too. Always talk to your doctor too!

Welcome to the board! I don't think I can add anything more other than what's been posted - I was going to suggest swimming but of course you're already doing that! How about water aerobics? Or deep water aerobics? It might switch things up a bit. This is a wonderful board, the women are great and always full of good advice!!

I want to thank everyone for their advice. I live in a very rural area and I could not find any pilates classes within an hour drive so I will be picking up a video to try. Unfortunately I can not get advice from my doctor because her reserve unit was sent to Iraq and she will be gone for at least a year and the doctor assigned to cover me in her absence has an attitude of you aren't really my patient and I don't care. And even worse my insurance won't allow me to switch. I have struggled with my diet because I have found that when all you can do is sit around it leads to depression and boredom which both lead to EATing. I hope that if I can start exercising I wil feel better about my self and that will help with the eating. I really hope the Pilates help If anyone can recommend a beginners video that doesn't have a lot of weight bearing exercise that would be great.

What a lousy situation with the doc. That is truly appalling.

Have you tried Pilates? There are several DVD's out there that are very easy to do in your home-you don't really need any special equipment. Shape (from Shape magazine) also puts out some great exercises DVD's. They are fairly inexpensive. I think you can get them at Target for about $15-18.
Good luck!
