Doing the things you never done

Ok I am 32 years old and I am overwieght, I have been overwieght my whole life. So now that I am 32 and I am in my career and done with school and have the resources to do what I want to do. Not only things I want to do, but things that I have never done before.

So Ok, I know I over wieght, so to get health I decided to join activities that will keep me active. Because being in the gym a walking machine for an hour, just bores me and I get off.

OK so I am 32 and I joined a Soccer League...I have never played Soccer in mylife, so I went one day and signed up. I got a lot of stares, but I have been playing now for a month and having fun.

Ok well today I joined a Ballet Floricico (mexican Ballet) class and I am as old or older of the parents of the kids that are in the class. It's something I did when I was a kid and loved it and so why can't I do it now. I overheard the teacher say oh that fat girl wants to join. Before that comment would make me mad and I would not come back. But at the end I am losing. So I got all the info and I will be in class next Saturday.

So if there is anyone out there that can relate to me...let me know. Encouragement is always nice.

Oh...tomorrow I have my very first official soccer game.

There needs to be an emoticon for applause so that I can give it to you!!

That is terrific, Tam! You are a wonderful inspiration to me; I hope that helps to encourage you.

I think you are totally right in ignoring that snide comment as well. Who cares what small-minded people say?!

GL tomorrow!

At the age of 32, and after carrying three babies in my body, I took belly dancing. I was one of the fat girls and one of the oldest, but I tell ya, I enjoyed every minute and would go back in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the impossbile schedule. I'd always wanted to try it and I am so glad I did. So, GOOD FOR YOU. Two thumbs up, and many pats on the back!!!!!

Sounds like you were better at belly dancing than me. I was so terrible at it that if I could have flunked out of the class, I would have. I have absolutely no coordination and couldn't imitate the movements we were supposed to be learning. It was fun at first, but became frustrating pretty fast! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Hi I am new to this posting messages on ivillage thing. I was very impressed with your efforts. I am 38 and have been overweight on and off for most of my life. Finding things that you enjoy that are outside the norm to some can be a really great way to motivate yourself. I started bellydancing at 33 and though I don;t do it in class regularly, throwing on that music on an off night gets me motivated. Do you think being in an organized team has made it harder to slack off? (my problem completely-oh I will just go next week that ends up being two months). Good luck to you and show that awful woman at the dance class that having a little bounce on you makes any dance look better! ps go gett'um on the field

Wow, thanks. I needed to hear that.
You know doing organized activities has helped me stay more focus. Because I have become part of a team and I see what happens, when people don't show to games or practices. So I don't like to be one of those people. It keeps me accounted and most sports you need to invest in equipment and after paying for all that...I think I better use it :) Also, it gets you out and I have met some really nice people.

I will for sure be in the dance class next Saturday. I am working on getting my practice uniform and shoes.

I will post how my game went tomorrow.

I'm impressed you have a lot of self esteem to do that. Good for you.

I find it quite offensive that the teacher would say that to anyone within earshot, what she says to her husband in the confines of her own home is one thing but in the the dance studio in front of other people she should be professional and that was by no means professional, what if a chubby little girl wandered in at that moment and wanted to join as well, boy wouldn't she be devastated to be behind the teacher and hear that.

I'm glad you have a thick skin. Its hard sometimes.

You are doing great! and welcome to the board

Smile,

Deirdre

Thank everyone for your support.

Well the soccer game was today. It went well, I played 1/2 the game and it is a lot harder to play an actual game then practice. We didn't when the game, but I played defense and learned so much.

It was a good time. One thing all I have to say is that soccer uniforms are not made for womens with breasts!

Thanks alot for everyones responses.

So I am going to go forward and keep practicing.
In regards to the Mexican Ballet....I am all over it....I hope....I am having doubts....I hope that once I get started I will be ok.
