Yoga vs. Pilates

I've now tried DVDs of both yoga and pilates and found that I'm equally bad at both, but I'm determined to follow doctor's orders and learn one or the other. So, I was hoping those of you who do one or the other could help weigh the pros and cons, so I can figure out which classes and/or DVDs to look for in the future. I think I'll do better just picking one, rather than trying to learn elements of both. I'd appreciate any feedback anyone has.

I'm the opposite of IG - I tried Yoga and found it to be a big yawn but I do like Pilates. I'm not a very flexible person though so I have to use the beginner-type Pilates dvds...

I'm a fan of Yoga if I didn't get up so dang early in the morning, I would be doing my cardio workout in the morning and Yoga every night to relax myself. My favorite DVD is by Gaiam called Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss

This is a tough one - it really depends on the exercises and the instructors I think.

I do like hatha yoga for relaxing and just limbering up, I like Ashtanga yoga for getting a good stretching workout with some sweat - it's a lot tougher than hatha. But I also like Pilates because I really feel like I'm working some of those deeper core muscles when I'm doing the ab work.

My suggestion would be to check out some different tapes and then use them depending on what kind of workout you are looking for.

Some of my faves right now are:

Pilates Beginners Mat Workout (GIAIM)

Yoga for Urban Living

Yoga for Back Care (GIAIM)

Yoga for Conditioning Weight Loss (GIAIM)

  • A coworker gave me an opinion today as well, in favor of yoga, saying it's easier to aggravate an injury doing pilates if you try something your body is not ready for.

~see that's what I would think too! I'm sure the pilates people would argue this though ;-)

Hmm I've always heard the opposite of what your friend told you and my physical therapist started me on pilates because of an injury.
