Need ideas again...

and you guys are always so great about this.

Okay, I hurt my arm/elbow, doing what, i have no clue. My doc said to baby it. No golf (WAHHHH), no elliptical.

So, what CAN I do? I'm assuming running. Maybe bicycling.

Here's thoughts though....if I run in my neighborhood, it's dark (cuz it'd be at 5am), and I'd be alone. After work just ain't gonna happen, so nix that thought. Do you think it'd be safe? I mean, our neighborhood is rated the safest large city in the nation (or was that the state), but still. Maybe I can ask my Sheriff SIL for mace.

Going to the gym. If I do that, I'd have to get up earlier, so I have time to get there, then get home, let the dog out etc. So, does that mean waking up before 5am. Oh gawd. I don't know. That's kinda scary. lol.

What would you do? What type of exercises? Would you run in the dark, alone? Or wake up earlier and go to the gym?

Sigh, I've gained weight, and I hurt myself. This always happens.

(ugh, I forgot about the tiny font. lol)

Cher..... oh Cher! Great to see you btw ;-)

What a bummer about the arm-- and the golf!! Of all things!!

My thoughts- the gym! How long do you plan to walk/run for? You know I'm not an early riser.... so neither would appeal to me, but the dark thing does get to me. No matter how safe it 'apparently' is!

Is there a walking route that others in your area use-- ie. that you'd have people around? If so, then not so bad. But if you're going to be along out there, then I'd say the gym for sure!

If you do end up deciding on the gym perhaps decide on a shorter workout time for the mornings and do some sort of 'jumping jacks' or something at home later.

Just my thoughts.... good luck! Hope to see you around here more =)

(oh, by the way regarding the small type; it's just the preview that still shows small, the actual "post" comes out normal size!)

Cher - I'm a scaredy cat so I wouldn't do anything in the dark. You never know... you always see on the news when something happens people saying "things like that have never happened in our neighborhood until now..." Can you do some exercise dvds - Walk Away the Pounds?

Why don't you take the dogs with you on a small walk in the am..maybe then you would only have to get up at 5:30am and not 5am and then again at night when you get home. So you only go 3-4 blocks each time. Do you work in an office where you can walk for 15 min twice a day? That way you get it in small chuncks and not all at one time and if you take your dogs with you then they will bark it someone tries to get close to you that should not.

Kate those are some great ideas! Cher - it's good to see you again! Sorry you're suffering from an injury though!

How about a walk at lunchtime - you don't have to force yourself to do a major workout, just forcing yourself to do something active is better than nothing - a walk around the block at lunch - a video at home a trip to the gym when you have the time - it all adds up!

Thanks everyone. All great ideas. Except for my dogs being watch dogs. hehehe. Unfortunately, if someone came up to them, they'd just want to be scratched on the butt or behind the ears. I'd be a goner.

I was thinking about that, taking the dogs for a walk. I have walked the puppy around the neighborhood at 5:30am, and it is deathly quiet (and living in an urban area, that's unusual). it's peaceful, but at the same time, I really don't feel comfy walking outside of that. And walking fast, I can cover both neighborhoods in about 25-30 mins...so that's a good thing though.

As for walking at lunch. No can do. I come home to take puppy out. All I have time for is him doing his thing, me shoving food down my throat, and back to the office (sad, huh?) otherwise, yup, I'd have walking time.

I like the idea of Walk Off The Pounds video. I was thinking of doing SI6 and just skipping all the arm stuff, or anything requiring me to use my elbow (like leg kicks for your butt).

I feel like a slug, and I really need to do something. I think I'll send off a Netflix DVD and get WOTP. hehehe. DH may need it too.

Thanks everyone! Like I said, you guys ALWAYS give me great ideas....or at least get me thinking too.

I can't remember Cher- but have you ever tried Leslie's tapes before?

I totally know where you are coming from both physically and mentally. I broke my wrist and couldn't do much. For starters, running is not a very good idea; I found it actually pumped too much blood to the injured area and was a bit painful. I walked, did the stair-master and rode a stationary bike. You need to remember to keep your arm elevated from time to time. I know how much it sucks to feel like you can't do much, but if you want to stay indoors, try a low impact aerobics tape or a step class (tape or in person) as both would at least get you moving and sweaty and will burn off the extra calories. Also, and this might make you feel better; whilst you are healing, your body is going to working harder and therefore your metabolism will rise a bit, so as long as you are moving you are going to stay fit.

Hope this helps! And stay positive; I understand you are feeling like a caged animal, but soon it will be over and your elbow will be fine!

I haven't used her tapes before. Anything I need to know?

Not sure if this will work, but this is the one I got....

I figured a variety is good. I get bored too fast.

Thoughts? Comments? Warnings?

Thanks for all the info. I never thought about blood pumping, NOT good for the joint. But then again, my doc does want me to keep the elbow warm so blood will flow TO it. Maybe running will be GOOD? lol. With that one, I think I'll ask him.

I still haven't made it to the gym, or any exercise for that matter. Maybe I'll take puppy for a walk after dinner. I think it shouldn't be too cold (as if I should complain, I'm in CA - I don't think IG nor I are allowed to complain about weather, hehehe).

I'll try the treadmill for walking, and the bicycle. I was thinking of my own bicycle, but I think the pressure on my elbow would hurt (from holding the handle bars).

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely ask my doc about running JIC.
