Disney Vacation Club???

Ok, so when I was down in WDW I saw all the adverts etc for DVC. I'm pretty interested in the whole "points" system, and loved the idea. However I can't get more information as I live in Canada - at least last time I checked I couldn't, they wouldn't send anything here in terms of brochures etc.

So what I was wondering is, what are the costs associated with it? Initial monetary outlay ~ $20,000?? Is there an annual fee, how much?? Is there a lot of selection, because I don't want to be going to Disneyland/Disney World all the time.

Thanks a lot for taking the time, I'm really interested to see if it's worth the money or not. (i'm quite a cheap person and can travel quite cheaply - though that might change when I have kids ).

We have a few board members that are DVC owners and I'll let them answer most of your questions since they have the firsthadn knowledge, especially regarding trading out. Have you checked out the DVC website? It's pretty informative. It's www.disneyvacationclub.com

Right now they are selling points at Saratoga Springs. That would be your home resort. There is a minimum buy in of 150 points. I think the current price is around $100 per point. There are financing options available. Once you have your min points then there are yearly maintance fees. The fees are based on your resort & the # of points you have. They range from $3.xx to $5.xx per point. So 150 points at Old Key West would be different than 150 points at Saratoga Springs.

Thanks a lot for that info.

And I know that you might not be able to answer my questions, but I thought i'd get them out there, and be a bit more specific (for those people that are DVC memebers).

Yes I have been to that website. In fact I've been over and over it. But I still have some questions. such as:

- I know that you can use your membership at all the Disney Resorts around the world, and also other disney vacations, but what about those other 500 destinations they keep mentioning; they talk about London, France, New York...but do they have a list, or pictures somewhere of the over 500+ destinations?

- also can your points be used for anything other then the actual accomodations themselves? Like I know RCI points you can use them for flights, and stuff.

- The "comments" all discuss "the ability to take a quality vacation at least once a year and not have to worry about if we have the money." - what about flights?! those are the biggest expense (normally) on a vacation?

- I understand about the upkeep costs of your resort (we have the same thing here with RCI points) but how do you figure how many points do you get? Do you have to pay more initially to get more points? (or i guess with financing options you can get more points as you go along?)

- how many points do you need for different things; let's just say the cruise, or the costa rica disney adventure?? How many points per person does it cost? Say you only have a two person family, can you take 2/3 vacations on the same amount of points it would take for four people to do one?

so i'll leave it at that for now. I'm obviously not ready to buy as yet, but depending on what I find out in my research I am definitly considering the option. (oh, would it be worth if for me as a singleton to buy? As i'm only 20, I think if i have the money, it would be nice to know that I have a vacation lined up each year. Do you think this is a bad idea? or what?

Thank you in advance for putting up with my questions.

We did the DVC tour when we were down there and they gave us a great hardcover book with all the places you can use your points and how many points it costs during different seasons. It has pictures and layouts of all the resorts at Disney, and then lots of stuff on the other places. We didn't buy in but wish we had since we are now going back in sept and we were there last oct!

Yeah, that's basically what I'm looking for is a book like that. I wish I could get one without travelling AAALLLLL the way to Florida or California. It's really unfortunate, that they won't give information to you without doing those tours.

But you think it's worth it then?

If you would vacation to disney or one of their other places often, I think it is worth it. I still wish we did it since we are paying for a whole week at POFQ. We love that resort, but would have been nice to stay at a home away from home!

Yeah, well I love travelling!! And I think that once I have a family, if I can take them all over the world (their 500+ destinations) including the Disney Resorts all over the world - France, HK, Tokyo, the Cruises and the Adventures. I would totally do it!

But just looking at doing the Adventures on their own, they are WAY more expensive then they need to be. I live in western canada, and they are staying at *the* top resorts in Banff and Jasper ~ no need for that, what's wrong with a holiday inn? Same with the cruise, it's 2 or 3 times the price of other cruises offered by different lines. So to me, if i was travelling without the DVC I would not do the disney Vacations, but I love disney....so if I could do them for cheaper I would love to.

And if I only had to cover flight or park tickets...or even nothing I would definitly go to Disneyland/Disney World way more often. I had a great time just last January being 20, so I am sure i'll enjoy it until I die.

WOW!!

You have been just wonderful! Thank you so much.

If you had the time, and not to inconvience you at all, I would LOVE to have the pages posted. Thank you so much for offering that!

It does sound like a good deal.

I first came upon "points" when my mom and I went to an "RCI Points" conference, and I was hooked! Then I saw that Disney does something similar, I was intrigued, but we didn't have time to go to a meeting. Now I wish I had made the time, but I never thought it wouldn't be available in canada. So I have got brochures from them, and found out about their "adventure" tours, which sound so fun too.

Thanks again.
