Some folks like to trade their Disney pins (and they have to be "official" for a fair trade) with other vacationers and Disney cast members. I say some folks because my kids have no interest in this! They buy their favorite pins and keep them. When approached for a trade, they hang on tight. :)
So....I am not well versed in the ways of trading, but others can help you there. I mostly wanted to tell you that we stopped buying pins at the parks long ago because there are such good deals on Ebay. We try to be picky about the seller, and we've not yet had a problem.

My DD loves to pin trade, she also heartily dislikes parting with her favourite pins (read ALL of them LOL!)
So I do tend to buy some ahead of time, from ebay and sometimes the online Disney store has good sales. I get doubles of the ones she already has or something that's close enough that she won't be tempted to keep them all!
The started sets of lanyards with pins come with doubles, so you can keep and trade - which is how we started. Pin trading (we find) is addictive and the pins are so cute it's easy to just buy and buy, so we set a budget for pin trading. This is somewhat complicated by the fact that now we all have the trading bug LOL!

We are going for the first time in May and bought a grab bag of pins off e-bay (we found some lanyards at a dollar store). We have only a couple we are not taking with us to trade. You will find it a lot cheaper to buy them before hand and if you are planning on trading, a grab bag is a good way to go as you can get some dublicates.
Have fun.
