Ok. We are taking our 9 yr old grandson to Disney in October. Do we need to provide an ID for him? You know when you fly they ask for ID (Driver's license) before you board the plane. I'm wondering if there is going to me grief and agrivation this Fall do to this real or exaggerated terror threat. I don't want to get there all ready to go and be detained for some BS nonsense.

I didn't have to provide anything for my daughter last year when she was 8 and we flew. But if you're worried, you can bring a certified copy of his birth certificate or go to the DMV and get a state issued ID card. Or does his school do student IDs?

I have flown with my 9yr DD many times and have never been asked for any proof of identity for her, but I was also told to carry a certified copy of her Birth Certificate just incase. Never hurts to be prepared.

I don't think you need one really anymore.

When my mother travels with my DD , often out of the country, I have to provide her with a notarized letter giving her permission to travel alone with her and seek medical treatment if necessary.

Whe my ex was alive, we both had to sign it.

You should be OK traveling with a birth certificate in the US.

I also highly suggest getting a "SPECIAL Power of Attorney for local parenthis" in case you need to seek medical care for the child in your care.

I wanted to second the other pp's suggestions about a Special POA. If your grandchild needs any sort of emergency medical attention you will not be allowed to make decisions on his behalf. Better safe than sorry.
