Plane Delays

Ok, I'm getting kinda nervous. We aren't going to DW until October and taking our 9 year old grandson. Have many of you expirienced plane delays? I remember back in 2002 my husband and I just went the first week in October. The plane we were supposed to fly home on had machanical trouble. they said they would try to have it fixed in an hour. Well, the hour came and went. We ended up having to either spend the night at the airport or a hotel, or wait until a plane arrived from Boston. We waited. We got home at 4am.

I just heard on the news the other night about all the delays and cancelled flights, an I panicing unnecessairly? It's my grandson's first plane flight and I want everything to go well.

Also, did any of you have problems with your carry on's with this new rules about only 3 oz allowed, etc. It's a pain in the arse, but I know it's how it has to be. I read you can't even take in a carry on a half used rolled up tube of toothpaste! It has to be a small travel size.

Don't worry too much! Something can always go wrong with a flight....but 9 year olds can really roll with the punches. Just be glad your grandson isn't 2 or 3! That would be the time to worry. :)

We've not had troubles getting through security, but we always check the FAA website just before our trip:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Also, I'll suggest going through your grandson's bag, just in case. At the last minute one year, my then 9-year-old son decided to throw a bunch of chargers and items with power cords in his bag. I am SURE it looked really awful going through the scanner, because the bag was treated as a hot potato, and thoroughly checked. I felt very sheepish for not checking beforehand.

Have fun planning! We'll be at WDW in September and October, and it can't get here soon enough for me. I look forward to taking my grandkids someday. That is wonderful.

We had a weather related delay on our return trip that caused us to miss our connecting flight. We were fortunate however that we have 3 sets of parents who live in Atlanta and I was traveling with my mom. so we crashed at her house for a few hours and she and my dad drove us to the airport on their way to work.

I'll definately second Laurie's suggestion of double and triple checking not only the children's bags, but the children themselves as well.

I thought that whole fiasco to be ridiculous. I'm frankly sick and tired of it. JUST PROFILE for goodness sake! I'm sick of it. They would pull aside a 65 year old grandmother and scrutenize her completely just for show. I know the precautions have eased up a bit. But I cannot and will not EVER FORGIVE Pres. Bush for ignoring his Aug 6th 2001 memo that specifically stated that "bin Laden determined to strike in the US."He is a worthless president, and so is his vice president.

I would have been livid if I would have had to throw out my 32.00 bottle of Estee Lauder liquid foundation. THEN finding out Air-port personell had a virtual Free-for -All with all the items thrown out. That really stinks!

I will look through my grandson's suitcase though.

watch the stuff you bring home too. I've read on a few other message boards of people having to scramble and find a way at the airport to mail things like snowglobes and cups with the floaty things home becuase they weren't allowed in carry on and either weren't trusted to checked luggage (snow globes) or purchased to late to pack.

ROFLOL - I was more thinking of liquid sanity savers for the 12 hour flight. :-)

Well....I am really not at all troubled by the restrictions and searches. It's never been bothersome at all for us, and I have 4 children. In fact, it's made us pack more efficiently, which is a plus. If you've not flown in a while though, I suppose the changes might be shocking and annoying. It's really not all that bad though.....if you know what NOT to bring, it's quick, and nothing will be taken.

I agree with it helping you pack efficiently.

We flew for the first time last Sept. First time ever for me & Aly, Mike's first time in over 30 years.

We always overpack (and we overpacked for that trip too--even though it got down into the low 40s in Colorado, we NEVER used our coats, and that took up a whole suitcase!!!).

They had just lifted the absolutely-no liquid ban in carry-ons within a week (days, actually) of our flight, but, just in case, we didn't pack ANY liquids in the carry-on.

But since I had never flown before, I didn't know any different anyway.
