rental car or not?

I need some advice as to whether or not we should rent a car, if we book our trip for october. We would spend most of our time at the parks, or our resort. The only reason I am even considering it is for the 1 day I will want to go to the oultet malls. Dh thinks we should get one because he hates the disney bus line ups, and the kids (12,8,2) will be tired, but I think its part of the disney experience, especially with the convenience of magical express, I'm not sure we should waste our $. Does anyone know how much it would be to take a taxi to the big outlets (buena vista, I think?). Any advice?

We usually drive down so have our truck when/of we want it but we rarely (and never on the last trip) use it onsite. The buses aren't that much of a hassle, but do add travel time. They don't make or break my vacation, but I've witnessed some people who I wish had some other form of transportation! LOL

The outlets aren't far from disney property but I don't remember what is within walking distance as far as food is concerned so it might end up cheaper to just rent a car for the one day and shop, eat, shop, go back to the resort instead of cab to outlets, cab to food, cab to resort. There's a rental place on Disney property. They will pick you up at your resort bring you over to sign the papers and bring you back to your resort after you drop off the car.

Now, I did hear this tonight. If there is a chance they may have to send the Space Shuttle Discovery up to fetch the astronauts if they can't fix the Endevor's hole. I think it ia less than 2 hours to the Cape. So having your car on hand would be a point. Guess itdepends when in October you are going. They said tonight they may have to send Discovery to fetch the Astronauts in October. I know someone who saw the Space shuttle go up back in the 80's and she sad it was like no other expirience on earth. She said the ground actually shuttered.

I don't like being w/o a car-I feel stranded. Plus, we're the kind of people that if something will happen, it will happen to us. Since we were staying on property, we didn;t have to pay to park @ the parks. We drove to MGM & AK from Ft. Wilderness and took Disney transp. to MK. We ended up needing a car since my DH threw his back and & I had to go to the drug store-it would have been a nightmare had we not had a car.

I think Alamo is the rental company on site but you always run the risk of not getting a car, if you don't make advanced reservations. But that's just me-I'm a worrywart.

We've never used a rental car at WDW. Even when we drive, we park the car when we get there and don't use it again until we leave to come home. It's just easier to use WDW transportation, and the buses/monorail are always cool when you get in, you don't roast for the first 5 minutes!

Your dh sounds like mine. the way we do it is if we are on the monorail line we don't get a car. if we are not, we get the car because it's quicker than waiting for the bus. you don't have to pay to park if you stay on property. so it's no big deal.
