why isn't it your place? it's better to keep your opinions to yourself than to try to help a friend? i don't get it. personally, i rather people be healthy than not annoyed at me, so i'd tell her if there was any chance that she'd take it to heart.
as far as i know, i don't know anyone in real life who has done a crazy diet in order to lose weight. my friends don't diet to lose weight and i can't think of anyone i know that needs to. of course most of these people are vegans, which a lot of people would say is a crazy diet in itself, but it must say something that none of them need to lose weight.
some people at work are on atkins, but i don't know if they've lost weight and/or kept it off. the only people i know of who have dieted to lose weight and have kept it off did it on Weight Watchers. And me, I guess - I lost weight counting calories and eating a whole foods diet.
I cannot believe that with all the information that is available now about losing weight that restrictive diets still exist. There are still liquid medically supervised diets out there. Didn't we learn anything after Oprah did her big liquid fast in the 80's????? You can't drink three shakes a day for the rest of your life!!
I dont know anyone that has lost weight on a restrictive diet. I have a friend that loses weight by nearly starving herself but she always puts it back on.
I spout off about the evils of dieting at the drop of a hat quite frankly. At work I don't target people specifically, but educate clients & participants during workouts about the pitfalls of dieting and how to make healthier choices. I don't however 'preach the gospel' to friends, but discuss healthy eating & activity as it pertains to the conversation, if it does. My main tactic is to rave to everyone about the success of the people I know who implement a healthy, well balanced diet & regular exercise. I've got a ton of them. There are folks whose goals are now to be one of the people I use in these examples.
Don't think of it as raining on their parade while their enthusiasm is high. Think about how crummy they'll feel when they put that weight back on & probably a little more. Use the 'success stories' tactic. People like to know what works & what doesn't and this way you're not raining on their parade, just giving them something positive to think about. Don't tell them they're wrong, but suggest things that might be more effective. We can't force others to make the decisions we think are appropriate but we can help educate them so they can make a more informed decision.
Most people seem to want the quick fix. I doubt they think beyond losing the weight to maintaining it. Also, alot of people may be ill-informed enough to think that it'll just stay off once it's gone.
Acting like the diet police is definitely not a good thing. I try to present the info w/o offering any strongly worded judgements. As everyone here knows, since I go on about it enough, I feel strongly that people should eat for health and if they need to lose weight they should just make 'cleaner' choices and take in just a few less calories than they need, but not to deprive themselves of anything.

It actually depends on the relationship I have with the person.

If you read some of the boards here, you'd be surprised at the number of people who have way too restrictive ways of eating.
