Powerflex vs Lifting
11
Tue, 11-23-2004 - 12:48pm
I am supposed to sub a Powerflex class tomorrow night. Usually I lift on Tue after my own step class. Would you lift today and do PF tom, or would you hit the cardio anticipating the class tom? This class is not designed to take the place of your weight lifting regimen, but it does make my muscles sore.
TIA,
Michelle

I don't know what powerflex is but I'm assuming it's toning with light weights and high reps?

Hey, Jean! PF is like Body Pump, a weighted barbell lifting class. It is designed for endurance mostly. It is predesigned for 3 or 4 min per body part with one min rest/weight change breaks. I could most likely get 'em goin' nad then cue most of it. I really would rather run...LOL! But it helped the guy get home for Thanksgiving!

There are so many classes like that now! Can you do both cardio and powerflex tomorrow? I'm not happy unless I get my cardio in.

hey what happened? i replied to this thread but it never showed up!

what i said was, i'm a bad person to ask since i hate weight lifting, but if it were me, i'd let the powerflex be my weight training workout, and not do weights today.

I know what you mean! I was thinking of ellipticall"ing" for about 45 min, then doing class.

I'm sort of leaning that way. I do like lifting, though...lol! I also think I may just run or get some cardio in before or after my class tonight for an extra calorie burn.

Do your cardio & skip the weights. I've been teaching this class for a few years now & can tell you that you muscles will need the break. The weight, although not heavy, is enough to be a serious challenge. I watched the bodies of participants that attend 2-3X/weekly change quite a bit in just the first 6 weeks. (I have to quit lifting heavy when I teach this more often.) Most people see more changes in this class than they ever did in the weight room. That's not say this type of class is the only way to go, but your body & one of your two weight workouts will suffer if you choose to both. As an instructor you're best to go into the class fresh, too.

When we first introduced PF it was amazing the turn out. People that typically don't lift now have the group setting they love and are building muscle. woohoo for them! But soem still never get to the weight room, shame....

Most of ours gave up the weight room in favour of this class. Not only do they get a solid, metabolism-boosting resistance workout, but they get it in an hour w/ a stretch; music; motivation, encouragement & correction if neccessary from a trained professional; and some cameraderie. We offer this type of class more than any other, on the one gym's schedule, and even after all this time its still #1 for attendance.

That's why classes like Body Pump and Rep Reebok are so popular.
