i'm not following you - you are saying they took away your class time at 5:30 and gave it to this woman who can't teach and moved your class time to 4:30? why would they do that? i guess i shouldn't ask why - my fitness director makes crazy scheduling decisions too, so i can relate.

Sorry, I guess that is my fault, I am not explaining this one very well.

i'm sorry, i still don't understand. the beginner's step was at 7:30? what happened to the teacher who taught it? she just stopped teaching any class that night at all? why did they move your class from 5:30 to 4:30?

this seems to be a very confusing situation. I'm sorry if I'm just being thick. i don't understand why they'd take people from a beginner's step class who outgrew the class and change it to a non-step class. Why couldn't the former beginners keep taking beginner step if they wanted to? I've never heard of an instructor or a gym saying to a member "you are overqualified for this class, so we are going to change the format of the class." Even if you were going to change it, why wouldn't you change it to a intermediate step class instead of a sports conditioning or whatever you want to call the class the bad teacher is teaching?

If i'm following this at all,

PS - just some general advice about being a new instructor. to some extent you will get the bad class times and the bad classes regardless of whether it's fair. There is an aspect of "paying your dues" while you are new, and certainly until you are certified you are at the mercy of the gym, for better or worse. I've had many many classes where no one showed up or only one or two people did. It's part of being a new instructor, probably part of being an instructor in general. I've also taught classes at terrible times - times no one else would agree to teach.

My advice is to just make the best of it and do whatever you need to do to get the most experience you can get. When you are more experienced, you will have more leverage to ask for or demand better class times, better classes, etc. Also, you'll be able to go to different gyms and get classes there if you don't like what the one gym is offering you. Just stick it out and make the best of it. I personally like it when no one shows up to my classes - it's a heck of lot better than teaching to one or two people and i get paid for doing nothing!

You are exactly right.

I totally understand about the crappy time slots. My morning class is at 11am, the housewives usually come earlier, and the lunchtime crowd isn't in yet. It was changed from 11:30.

Jen - you are lucky you get paid for doing nothing, if no one shows up I don't get paid.
