There are really only 2 certifications for SPIN...if you aren't trained by them, it should not be called spin. There are specific guidelines on arm movements and lower body position. It is the same thing that happened to step...if doing it one is good, making it harder or faster must be better. Heart rate is really not supposed to be that high, that is why heart rate monitors are a must so you work at your moderate heart rate zone.

I am not certified in it, so I don't have all the info. I was scared off when seeing and taking what was going on in "spin" classes. Also, I think it is Jonny G spin, you take the certification and then you have to log something like 60 hours of class taking before you teach. I don't know too many instructors who have done that.

I should look into it more so I can give more specifics. I don't even remember the name of the other spin certification.

In one gym that I sub at, when you walk past the spin room the music is so loud it kills your ears even with the door closed. The members complain but nothing has been done about it. People leave the class and some don't go back unless they are wearing ear plugs. I have noticed very loud music in every gym I have been in so far.

The very first class I took was with an instructor who didn't even use the bike. She walked around the room and talked quietly and the music was pretty mellow. Like you Jean, I was bored to tears and stayed for only a half hour. She was doing everything right, but it just wasn't for me. I haven't found where she is teaching now though because I would like to try another of her classes. I can see where it could be a good workout and why guys are willing to take it.

Is this one where you're standing and your upper body doesn't move?

Our class is not spin, it's indoor cycling.

i suppose you could do it with your upper body moving or not moving. either way, the thing that makes it bad is that you are standing straight with your butt over the pedals instead of back over the seat.

I think the illegal move you're talking about is called "hovering". That's where you are hovering your butt over the seat while still pedalling. It is bad for your knees, Jean, which is why a reputable spin/cycling instructor won't use that move.

i disagree - that's not bad for your knees as long as you keep your weight back over the seat. "real" cyclists do that all the time. it's the same old "knees forward of the toes" thing - if you keep your butt back, your knees stay on top of your toes or behind throughout the whole pedalling motion and the weight of your body is supported by your leg muscles. if you let your butt go forward, your knees start to go forward of your toes, and the weight of your body puts all kinds of strain on your knees.

I don't know where my butt is in relation to the seat! I'll have to check it out.
