Do you enjoy subbing?

I like subbing because I get the extra money and it's not as monotonous as regular classes. I get a lot of calls for subbing because the sub list is in alphabetical order and my last name begins with B!

But it tends to be a "when it rains, it pours" kind of thing, sometimes I am overwhelmed with requests, then nothing for a few weeks. And oftentimes it's for evening classes, and I am only available for subbing in the morning.

sometimes i like subbing and i look forward to it. it depends on the class, the format, etc. it's something different to do outside of my normal routine. but i mostly only sub classes that i want to sub. when i take classes solely to help out another instructor i often wish i didn't have to teach and don't look forward to it at all.

in general though, i mostly teach because it is a challenge and a structured workout (you can't blow off a workout if you've already promised to teach!) not because i think it's fun per se. so i can't say that i'm very often like "woo hoo i get to teach today!"

It is a "when it rain, it pours" situation!

I'm kind of doing them because I can't say "no" because both instructors have been great about working with me.

i'm sure there are for some people, but i'm not the "woohoo, i get to go to work" kind of person. if my job was to sit on the couch and eat chocolate, i'd probably still not feel that way.

you should just teach step. you'd have a lot more fun teaching that, i bet. you could be ready to teach step by february easily. you seem to be procrastinating about it.

i agree you will have to do choreography that is more "boring" than you'd like to do at first. but beyond that, you just have to start teaching! you probably WILL have times that you can't keep the beat, and times that you cue completely wrong despite how many times you did it right when you were alone. you just have to accept that you are going to mess up, and often. you will probably suck at it the first time you try to teach step. everyone does when they are starting out.

but the more you put it off and psyche yourself up about it, the harder it will be. there's no way around it but to just start doing it. the sooner you start doing it, the sooner you will stop sucking at it.

That's a good way to put it. If I start teaching, maybe by summer, I'll stop sucking.

starting with teaching just part of a class is a good idea, so is practicing on your SIL's but only if they've done step before. it's a LOT harder to teach step to people who are new to step.

They've done enough that they could follow a basic class but, you're right, I wouldn't want to teach total newbies as a new instructor.
