I really like to sub. I can get away with murder doing it too. I can use the same routine and no one notices because they don't see it all the time. I especially like subbing at different gyms...I can get away with even more.
You probably don't like subbing because you are new to it Jean. It will get easier the more you do it. You also like doing your own routine so when you sub, you mess up your lifting. So..your feelings are understandable.
Here I just said I like to sub but I am dreading the classes tomorrow. I have to do 3 45 minute classes in a row...the first and third are sculpting classes. The first is a body bar class..with bars that are 9 lbs. and the whole class is only bar..no other prop. Nine lbs is too light if you ask me. The second class is that Boot Camp one and I am getting mixed messages on how to do it. The manager wants me to keep it as much cardio as possible which is fine with me, since I don't want to do more toning. The third class is a total tone. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do with the Boot Camp. I can always say I am a sub and this is what I do and just do a combo of step, kickboxing, hi/lo with jacks and lunges and squats mixed in as well as some leaps and jump rope. I will figure it out eventually.
I agree, Jean....it is hard to sub for a regular instructor who is well liked in the gym you are a member. Now tomorrow, it is not a "favorite" instructor and the class is only one week old. This gym changes classes all the time with the seasons and they don't even ask the instructors what they would like to do or what works in that time slot. It is a chain and it comes down from the home office. Their attitude is learn it and teach it or quit. The problem with that is a lot of the classes are what I consider unsafe for the "general population". They even expect instructors to teach things like yoga and pilates even if they are uncomfortable teaching it. The management tells you to take a cerification, pay for it yourself and teach it. Isn't that awful? Pilates and yoga take a lot of training. A weekend, nobody certification is not going to do it. Oh, oh..I better get off my soapbox.
I sub in about 7 different gyms and it is a good way to do it. Some of the gyms are happy to have a sub so the class won't be cancelled but at others, the regulars will just walk out. I also ask the instructors not to tell the class ahead of time that they are not going to be there at certain gyms. The members will just not show up.

I am still unsure about whether I like subbing or not.
Exactly.... the class I subbed for yesterday is no way no how like the classes I take.
