However, i am disappointed in my favorite instructor lately. I *adore* her for the music she plays - really retro - last night she topped herself with Copacabana - woo hoo! However, she has started adding a move which I think is "illegal", which is jogging straight up and down over the pedals (with the hands in 2nd position). It just feels wrong and very stressful to me. Also, her form is not what i would consider great - she tends to bob from side to side on the bike (i think she likes to get her ponytail in the act...).
Music makes a huge difference to me, and the only other instructor at the gym cranks out heavy metal and Beastie Boys on the one hand and Britney Spears and Boys to Men on the other. I feel like walking out of his class just because the music is so awful. But physically, the pace and form of his class is superior.
Anyhow, spinning is the best cardio workout for me!
Nothing gets my heart rate pumping than a good cycling class. I have to question my instructors moves, too. I was reading in a spin message board about some moves she's been doing that are questionable. One of them is pedaling with one foot. I heard it's not a good idea taking your foot out of the cages. Next time I'm going to keep both feet in the cages and working one one foot taking the other foot along for the ride. But I love the class!
From someone who doesn't really take spin classes or like them, aren't you supposed to wear a heart monitor when doing spin and not go higher than a moderate (middle ground) target heart rate? Around here you can't take a spin class without one because you are really supposed to keep the heart rate a certain level.
I have to say, I did get my heart rate up quite high with the hi/lo I taught today. But then, naturally for me, my heart rate is higher than others when exercising. Always has been. According to the heart rate charts, I should be 20 years old. I can talk easily and feel fine...I have heard of others that are like that. Now if I power walk, my heart rate doesn't go anywhere near that.
Marcia Brady - hysterical! I was just thinking of her last night, really! My posture and alignment have been lousy lately, and i seriously heard that walking with books balanced on your head is supposed to help straighten you out (as well as prevent a double chin). You'll think i'm crazy, but i was actually trying this in front of my dh last night, and we both thought of the Brady Bunch episode where Marcia and Jan were doing this, in preparation for some beauty pageant. I dropped the poor book laughing so hard.

Jump rope kicks my butt. or squat jumps. Ugh.
Spinning beats all for heart rate for me!

you don't have to do that "illegal" spinning

The last spin instructor I had had us pedal with one foot AND she encouraged us to rock back and forth while pedaling. I am confused now! ;)
