I am "step" stupid

In my efforts to change my workout, I saw there was a step class at my gym last night at 6:30, I normally don't even get out of here until than so I was excited to be able to make it.
I get in the class, and we get going and I could NOT keep up at all. The physical part of it was not the problem, it was the moves, and the pace. I felt so stupid because half the time I was standing there trying to watch everyone and I knew I was doing it all wrong.
I did 45 mins of the class and than when they went into cool down I took off. I had done 10 mins on the bike before hand and all my ab work, so I went out to the elliptical for 20 mins.
I did work up a sweat and such, I am sore today from the lunges, I actually understood that part.
Yikes, I felt like an idiot.
I am going to try a low impact class this weekend perhaps without the step I will understand some of the moves.

HOOK EM HORNS!
I am sooo not a step person, but I am such an aerobics person. There came a time where my gym went through some issues with classes and instructors and all the classes had some type of step in it. I was so mad, but I forced myself to learn it. It takes time!!!!
It probably took me 6 months to get it down, where I could get through an entire class. I actually learned to like it, because you do sweat your butt off no matter what pace you go at.
My gym figured out their scheduling quirks (ffeeewww) and now there are many other options besides step, so I have not taken a step class in almost a year and if you put me back in a class I would probably stand there like a deer in headlights.
Step is all about keeping going to classes and getting use to how the instructors cue/ getting use to your instructor.
Good for you for sticking it out for the 45 minutes, Jodi! It is hard the first few times to just jump in. I have been teaching for so long, I started doing step as it became popular. Ugh! Anyway, a beginner class should be offered in every gym...even if it is one class every other week. One gym I used to teach at had a sign up sheet and got an instructor to teach it when enough newbies were interested.
Going to turnstep.com or renting some videos to watch to get used to the moves are two good things to help you. There really is a standard Reebok terminology for the moves and turnstep is pretty good. Hopefully, there will be a national standard terminology soon.
Also, a muscle memory will develop when taking more step. You won't have to think about what each move is, it will come naturally. So, if you think you will like doing it to crosstrain, it will get easier if you keep going and watching. There is nothing wrong with marching in place or doing basic steps until you get it down. We have all been there!
Anyway, most step classes are taught at a too fast a pace...it wasn't you! You should see what happens when I teach within guidelines. I have people yell to speed it up and I just yell back use your arms and squeeze your muscles and use good form!! After class they are dripping wet from sweat.
Hope it gets better for you. Welcome to the step club! Oh, Undone has recently started taking step...maybe she can give you some pointers on how she caught on.
