exercise "when you feel up to it"????

what do you think that means when a doctor says that? does it mean "exercise if it doesn't hurt" or "exercise if you don't mind it hurting"?

as you know, i had surgery last thursday. i want to go to yoga tonight but my stomach is still really sore when i bend over or twist, or even walk quickly. it's like a bruised kind of soreness, plus also like a tightness and pulling feeling from the incision. my doctor said i can exercise after monday, if i feel up to it. i can handle exercising through the soreness, but i don't know if the presence of pain means that i shouldn't exercise. or maybe the stretching would be good for me?

That's ambiguous.

I would probably start off slow, like doing a short walk and see how you feel. I agree that his guidelines are rather ambiguous so you're going to really have to listen to your body on this one. I would probably stick to the same guidelines about pain that I always do - dully, achey pains are normal and at times expected, sharp shooting pains are not and you should stop if you feel them.

the problem is the pain doesn't fit into those categories. it's more like a tight pulling feeling and a dull shooting pain. what i'm most worried about is re-opening the incision.

i think what i'll do is compromise and go to my old yoga class (at 6:15) instead of my new one (at 8). so it will be easier and less strenous.

My doctor gave the same ambiguous advice after I had pneumonia over Christmas (though I admit that is a lot different than having surgery). It had been a week since the end of the antibiotics, I was going stir crazy not being able to go to the gym, but she just said, "do it if you feel up to it-just listen to your body." RRR.

Hopefully the other yoga class will feel good-just be careful and if you're feeling anything weird at all you can stop. I erred on the side of caution (if I had any pain at all, I waited to do any exercise except walking), but that was me. :)

Yep, I'm a newbie rat-I just discovered this board a while ago. I like to go to the gym 2-3 times a week and to Krav Maga class a couple times a week. Of course, I'm still battling my way back since the pneumonia. It sapped all my energy and when I started working out again, it was like I was back at square one cardio-wise! Very frustrating. But I'll get back to where I was soon.

oh, yeah, i remember you are the person that posted about Krav Maga! how exciting to have someone here who does Krav regularly! your last name doesn't happen to be Bristow, does it? because sydney bristow kicks butt - she must know Krav too. (as Paula says, i watch too much Alias.)

i really want to learn Krav someday. one of my many goals! i'm on an email list for a local school and i just got an email telling me to watch "Enough" starring J Lo on cable because i guess her character in the movie learns Krav and uses it to defend herself. i have to check that out.

i'm glad you are feeling better from your pnemonia. hope you stick around. we love butt kicking girls here at gym rats.

That's right--your name looked familiar but I couldn't place it.

I wish I were Sydney Bristow sometimes-I am an Alias and Jennifer Garner fanatic. I even got a red wig and dressed as season 1 Syd for Halloween (my hair matched my 2 year old's Elmo costume-hee!)! The fact that I could do some martial arts moves made the costume look that much more realistic. ;)

Enough shows JLo learning one of my favorite Krav moves-getting out of a choke from the front. Done properly, the move always works, regardless of how big the aggressor is. They also show her warming up with the instructor, where she tried to tag his knees and shoulders. We do that with partners in class and it gets your blood pumping pretty quick. Just my humble opinion, but the only parts of that movie that I like are the training parts.

The other thing I love about Krav classes is that sometimes in warmup, we get to indulge our inner children by playing tag or dodgeball. :) Gotta love that!

Anyway, glad to be here-love this board!!
