Where's My Motivation?!

Hi. Allow me to introduce...myself. My name is Becky and I have doing the South Beach Diet since Jan. 1st. I am loving this diet and have noticed my weight go down just by taking care of my eating habits. Now I want to get even more healthy and in shape.

I have been struggling with my weight for years and now that I have the food thing down, I am trying to get myself to the gym. I have a membership and I am wondering how I can get motivated to go. I tried the personal trainer and that did help, but I can't afford it. My problem is that I HATE to work out but I know I need to suck it up and go because it is good for me. How do you guys get motivated to go to the gym?

I think about all my clothes not fitting. Plus, I work at the gym. That helps too!

hi becky - welcome! if you get a chance, give me a summary of what the south beach diet is all about - obviously i've heard of it, but i'm curious as to what the actual diet is.

as for exercising, i agree with jean - find what you like to do. maybe there are things at the gym that you like that you haven't tried yet, like classes, or swimming, or a different machine. or try things outside the gym like hiking, snoeshoeing, walking, rollerblading, dancing, martial arts, riding a bike, playing on a local soccer team... are there any active activities

Hi, Becky!

Welcome to the board and congrats on your dieting success.

I have to agree with the others. Find something you enjoy that gets you moving. That doesn't necessarily have to be in the gym.

Do you like the outside? How about taking walks outdoors? Are you more an inside sort of person? You can watch the news (or any other show) while riding a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill. The possibilities are limited only by your own imagination.

I would start by listing out "where" you like to be, then move on to active things you like to do and then figure out the best thing.

Good luck on finding your exercise niche. I really hope that you stick around:)

To answer your question about South Beach it's not low carb or low fat. It's eating good carbs, good fats and tons of fiber. The first week week was hard because it was a low carb diet just so my body could detox. After that first week was up, I felt so much better and now I don't even want any of the crap I ate before.

I don't know why I hate working out. Once I get to the gym I'm fine, but I dread it all day and then I end up not going because of excuses. I think part of the reason is once I walk into the gym, I have no idea what to do. What machines to use, how many reps, how much weight I should lift. It's all a mystery to me. Like I said before, I had a trainer at one time and I LOVED her. She pushed me to work hard and she would tell me exactly what I need to do for the results I wanted to get. If I could afford it I would go back with her in a hearbeat.

Oh, that helps--I thought you hated the workout.

if that's the case, i think that you will probably have an easier time getting to the gym once you get used to it and get in the habit of it. sometimes it helps to tell yourself to just go and do 15 minutes. and then once you get that far, usually you will stay and do the rest of your workout.

as for not knowing what to do, classes might be a good idea. or, get just one or two training sessions with a trainer and have her design a plan for you to follow. then when you go to the gym, you'll know what to do. then, in a couple of months, you can have another session to make adjustments. maybe you can afford that, rather than paying for every single week.

you can get ideas in magazines like Shape for things to do at the gym. in general, if you are using weight machines, just pick one machine for each part of your body and do a couple of sets on it. lift enough weight that you can't do more than
