I was watching the rep reebok class before I taught yesterday and there were quite a few students with poor form (actually, only a few had good form).

I personally do not take classes like this because I do think they go too fast. We have a body-pump style class at my gym and I did it once and haven't been back. I got a nasty case of tennis elbow from doing tricep kickbacks at breakneck speed. I often steer my clients away from classes such as these because I think there's a significant risk for injury. I am probably more cautious with form than is necessary, but that's too bad. If you've been working out for a while and have a general idea of what you're doing, I think these classes can be a relatively decent supplement to your workouts. However, I prefer to do my own thing at my own pace with my own music. :)

Also, this is precisely why group muscle classes are my nightmare... I can't imagine trying to teach the exercise AND make the rounds to make sure everyone is doing it correctly. (This is not to say it can't be done... I'm just saying I wouldn't want to do it.) This is where I realize how much I enjoy PT because I can focus on one person.

The big difference between Rep Reebok and Body Pump vs. power toning is that people use heavier weights.

That's the same reason some trainers I know refuse to teach classes like that.

how do they get people to pick up such heavy weights?!?! when i teach body sculpting i can't convince anyone to pick up anything heavier than a 5lb weight. i don't know who you are talking about, but whenever i teach no one will pick up a weight that is heavy ENOUGH, let alone ever come close to trying to lift a weight that is too heavy.

I think the class attracts people who do.

AMEN!!!! I hear you on that...Generally I'll compensate by making the class do more reps. *I* personally use lighter weights, because it's not my workout, but sometimes I think if I used heavier weights then the class would do so as well.

No, I use heavier weights when I teach and very few others do.

Hi, Jean! You are starting to sound like me with watching people's form in the classes. I have to stop looking around at others when I take classes. I am surprised every time that more participants don't get hurt and that is in all types of classes. I could write a book!

I don't teach body pump or a "name" class and that is why I don't like to teach those "new" classes at that one gym that we are supposed to follow a printed format. I do like teaching body sculpting because I do try correct people and guide them to perform the exercises properly. At this one gym, I am the only one who does and the people are glad that I do. I also tell people not to follow the beat of the music if I think it is too fast to perform the exercise properly. I also think of body sculpting more of a muscle endurance class instead of a strength class.

Did you get the new American Fitness magazine from AFAA? I am so glad they have the guidelines on teaching step. I am going to share it since the class I took Monday disregarded at least 2 of the guidelines.

I read the new magazine but must have skipped the article about step guidelines. I'll go check it out--thanks!

Jean,
