strength training vs. cardio

strength training vs. cardio

I'm new to the gym world and I'm looking to tone up. I am relatively thin so my main goal is to build some muscle and toning. That said I hate doing cardio. Excercise bikes, treadmills, elipticals all bore me. I really enjoy using the weight machines at the gym.

I always hear people talk about the importance of adding weight training to a cardio regimen but not the other way around. Am I going to negatively impact my results if I do strength training ever other day (I know muscles need to rest to build) with only say 20 minutes of cardio for warming up or is it really important to be adding some 30/45 minute cardio work outs in there?
