Hungry Hungry Gymrats...
| Wed, 03-09-2005 - 12:35pm |
I know we all train pretty hard here and I also know that most of us pretty successfully eat several times a day (3 meals and 2-3 snacks). My questions are...
Do you eat because you're hungry or because it's "time"?
Do you eat within a particular macronutrient spread?
Do you have any food rules that you adhere to most of the time (such as not eating after 8 p.m.)?
What is your favorite meal of the day and why?

Do you eat because you're hungry or because it's "time"?
Both, I suppose. I've trained my body to expect food every 3 hours or so. I'm usually hungry for my next mealtime unless I'm really distracted or stressed.
Do you eat within a particular macronutrient spread?
Presently, I'm eating about 40% protein, 30% fat and 30% carbs. I've never eaten this way before and I've really noticed a difference. My workouts seem to be better and my fatigue has all but disappeared. I know the rule of thumb is that athletes/gymrats should be eating a higher percentage of carbs, but with that rule, I was much hungrier and much more tired.
Do you have any food rules that you adhere to most of the time (such as not eating after 8 p.m.)?
I try not to eat fruit by itself (affects my blood sugar a lot if I do). I try very hard not to go longer than 4 hours with no food. I have a large Baja Fresh plastic cup and I try to drink 4 of those (water) per day. I try to avoid processed foods much more than before. I am careful to watch for added sugars. I generally do not eat white flour or white rice. Everytime I eat, I consume protein. I usually have some type of vegetable with lunch and dinner (salads almost every day).
What is your favorite meal of the day and why?
I enjoy eating so I enjoy all of my meals (unless they're rushed) but I probably enjoy breakfast the most. DH and I usually sit together and eat, have our green tea and read the paper. It's a relaxing quiet time of morning and it's one of the favorite parts of my day.
Good questions!
Do you eat because you're hungry or because it's "time"?
Both (LOL, I just eat all the time!).
i ONLY eat when i'm hungry. never because it's time. hence, i usually eat at weird times. i'm eating lunch right now.
i don't intentionally eat a particular proportion of macro nutrients but inevitably my natural eating habits are almost always the same - 20% protein, 25% fat, and 55% carb. and that is the proportion i'd shoot for if i were trying, so i'm happy with it.
i don't have strict food rules, but i have guidelines: i try to eat most of my calories earlier in the day, i try not to eat the same type of grain more than once a day (wheat vs. rice etc.), i try not to eat more than one "serving" (my version of a serving, that is)
oh, i
- I'm trying to eat when it's "time", because usually if I wait till I'm hungry I tend to
overeat. I space my meals and snacks about 2-3 hours apart.
- I don't have a set macronutrient ratio that I follow, but according to Fitday I am settling into a 50% carbs, 25% protein, 25% fat ratio, give or take a few.
- My rules are: eating whole grains, no soda, eating and buying organic food (unless the prices are outrageously more expensive), eating at least one dairy product a day (not milk, though), not eating the last piece of anything left on the plate (this stems from a weird Korean superstition that states that whoever eats the last piece gets fat), eating and cooking most meals at home, cooking and baking from mostly scratch.
- Dinner is my most favorite meal, because it's the one time we can sit down together and just eat. When we do go out to eat, it's usually for dinner; and since we rarely eat out, when we do go to a restaurant it's a nice one that I've been looking forward to going.
I eat as much as I do 3 meals a day and 2 snacks a day becuase I am that hungry. I wish I was one of those people who did not need food all the time.
My favorite meal is dinner, because I always cook it fresh.
I'm ALWAYS hungry. :-P
Do you eat because you're hungry or because it's "time"? >>> It's always time to eat w/ my schedule.
Do you eat within a particular macronutrient spread? >>> Not really, although I avoid consuming any kind of carbs on their own, I always include fats or protein. I try to eat intuitively, but it's often affected by what's readily available & how much time I have.
Do you have any food rules that you adhere to most of the time (such as not eating after 8 p.m.)? >>>Since I eat supper so late, I always have a little extra protein before bed to slow the rate the carbs I've consumed are metabolised so I'm not woken up by low blood sugar levels.
What is your favorite meal of the day and why? >>> Since I'm an endless grazer I don't really have a fave meal.
