when i sub the weekend step classes there are a couple of people that do that. they don't think they are getting enough of a workout by following the class so they do their own thing. i really don't care when they do that when i'm teaching because they are usually toward the back of the room, but when i'm taking a

Do you mean that she is doing kickboxing moves while everyone else is stepping, modifying steps, or is she completely making up her own combinations? I guess that would be kind of distracting. We have a few people in my performance step class that do their own thing but only one of them is distracting. For instance, there is a woman in my class that likes to jump rope or do heel moves while everyone else is squating. I assume she does that because she wants to keep her heart rate up. That's not distracting. But the guy in the back row that does some form of martial arts complete with "Hy-ya" screams while everyone else is stepping is a little distracting. He used to be *a lot* distracting but we're used to him now. He knows he looks ridiculous but he enjoys it. On-lookers who stand at the doorway who aren't taking the class seem to be the only ones truly distracted by him.

This is the hard part of the job. Whether you like it or not you have a reponsibility to ask this woman to move to the back. I think every instructor gets someone like this at some point and you can't kick them out but if they're up front where they're distracting both you and part of the class they need to be asked to move to where they're less noticable. The distraction she's creating is a safety issue. Just say something like, "I notice you like to be creative in class, unfortunately it can be distracting for some of the other participants which I'm worried might lead to someone getting injured. Could I bother you to move to the back so this isn't an issue? Thanks, it really is appreciated. {{{big smile}}}" One of three things will happen: she'll move & keep doing her own thing but out of the way; she'll start following the class; or she'll leave.

Good luck and take care.

That is exactly what I mean... yesterday I taught kickboxing and during the warm up she is breathing heavy and punching before we started any of that.

It would be hard dealing with someone with her personality. I wonder if she'd take it the wrong way if you told her to move back. One instructor was telling me you just have to deal with those students who think they know better than you.
