What is the correct form when doing the elliptical? Does your upper body remain still? Can anyone tell me why my toes feel numb/tingle?

I just started running this weekend, the last race I ran was in 1999, so I am a little sore, LOL. Does anyone have a link or know a place where I can go that has a schedule so I can ease back into running? My city just hosted our first marathon/half marathon/5K race a couple weeks ago. My goal is to run the half marathon next year and run a full marathon before I turn 40 (which by the way is staring me in the face, LOL)

Help.

TIA

Frazz

I've never thought of the correct form... I'm assuming you're doing the ones w/out the arms?

LOVE YA!!!!

I can do this program.

The elliptical has the arms. Someone on here mentioned people bobbing on the machine. When I am doing the machine, I tend to drift off into lala-land, then I get into a momentum and then realize I am bobbing a little bit. I'm just wondering is this the reason my feet are going numb or something else and will bobbing hurt me or my workout.

Thanks for the link!!

my foot sometimes goes numb on the elliptical too. the only suggestion i have is to try to wiggle your toes and hope that helps a bit.

i'm not sure what you mean by "bobbing" but i've never tried to keep my upper body still on the elliptical crosstrainer. i just go with what feels natural with the movement, trying of course to keep my abs engaged and good posture.

I've noticed that my feet tingle when my shoes are getting old (not enough support).

When you're on the elliptical, you want to make sure that you're not draped over it. When I use the elliptical (unless I'm really tired) I do not use the handles. I have my arms at my sides going back and forth just like when I run. You burn more calories this way and it also helps with core strength. Just be careful if you try this and make sure the handles are within reach if you start to lose your balance.

My bet on why your feet are going tingly or numb is flat feet. I never even knew i had flat feet until i started exercising. I was mainly doing the arch trainer which is similar to the ellipitical. All of a sudden one day i could barely walk and in pain, went to doc and flat feet was the problem. I too had the tingling and numb toes. Once i got the orthotics in it helped tremendously. Also try to put more of your weight in your heals instead of up on your balls of the feet. This helps me out too. HTH Suzanne

i think there must be multiple reasons why this can happen. i have really high arches, and my foot goes numb on the elliptical too! i like the idea jean posted of making sure to flex and extend the ankle. that seems to be the main difference between being on the elliptical and walking or other forms of exercise - you can do it without really moving your ankle.

Interesting..i didn't realize this happened to people with high arches too. Heh, question for ya, since we are talking about arches.lol Is it necessary to get new orthotic inserts yearly, does the feet change? The reason i ask is i have been finding that my feet have been really hurting lately when i'm working out. Very similar to when i first needed the orthotics. I find that first thing in the morning my feet just kill to walk on. I use the orthotics when i workout but unfortunately i don't wear them all day because i don't wear shoes around the house, or they don't fit the shoes i'm wearing (i have so many different pairs.lol) How can you support your feet at home, without wearing the shoes indoors? Is there slippers that have orthotics? I wouldn't think that the orthotics have altered at all, since they are made of hard plastic..my feet perhaps? Is that possible? I'm going to my doc at the end of the month for a physical and was going to mention it too him as well. Suzanne
