I have a callus an inch below my big toe from my running shoes.

i never had a callus (is that spelling right?!) that hurt or that i wanted to get rid of. i thought they were supposed to be a good thing, that prevented blisters.

my instinct is to go for mole skin or something to reduce the rub rather than try to get rid of the callus. won't it be even more sore underneath if you remove it?

I have calluses on my hands (which I need) but if they get too thick and ragged they're likely to tear, which is really unpleasant.

I sand mine with a pumice stone; it works best to use it in the shower or bath after the skin has had a few minutes to soften up. I also used to do Kendo (Japanese fencing), which requires you to be barefoot on a hardwood floor, and during that time I had really thick calluses on my feet that tended to tear, so I know a pumice stone will work on the thickest, toughest skin.

Some people swear by using a razor to shave them, or one of the tools that has a blade, but that's a little too scary for me.

I always picture you as a big powerlifting guy--it's funny that you know about pumice stones and own one!

Oh you would be shocked by how important callus maintenance is to guys who lift... I guess it's just not a topic that ever comes up in normal conversation, but we're all hiding our stones.

As soon as I see a callus forming on my feet I panic.
