I've been thinking about this lately... When you lift on unstable surfaces, you work your core BUT you don't lift as heavy.

Yes, I agree. I would think that if you lifted heavy and then followed with the ball you would get the most benefit. For example, if you are doing chest, you could lift heavy and then you could do light weights for chest on the ball. This way you are "burning out" the chest muscle while working core.

Exactly--like I could do chest press on the bench and then do push ups on the ball or BOSU. I think I'll do that. I get tons of core work in as it is.
