How about we use this thread with where we want to go, then each week we can post what we're going to do that week to help get there?

I have highlights too. I put on a lot of leave-in conditioner then put on a swim cap. I wash my hair as soon as I get out of the pool. That is one reason that I do not swim a lot, it is really bad on the hair, and a pain in the hindend during colder months (washing and drying hair so I don't turn into an ice cube).

Well, I've seen sprint triathlons range from a half a mile (800 meters) to a mile (1600) in swimming. I'm not sure what the standard is.

you'll wear a cap, right? definitely wet your hair before you put on the cap, and putting some leave-in conditioner on too couldn't hurt. it's definitely harder on hair color than not swimming, but if you do those things it shouldn't be too bad.

in addition to using a buoy, like paula says, another way to work on your stroke is to wear fins or gloves. i've never worn gloves, but i use fins to help me work on my form for the freestyle because i don't have to struggle with the kick and the pull at the same time. but also using kickboards, buoys, etc. keep it from getting boring, and also help you switch gears and keep going when you get tired doing just laps of freestyle. you can also alternate strokes - freestyle is very hard for me and breaststroke is easy so i alternate half laps.

if we are going to make up a virtual triathlon, we can make it any distance we want! i think starting with a 800m swim is a good idea - that's only 16 laps in a 25 meter pool. what about 5k run, 800m swim, 10k bike?

are triathlons usually run in a certain order (i.e. is it always run, then swim, then bike), or do they vary?

I think it's usually swim, bike, run. I just read the swim is .75km--could that be right?

15 laps (of mixed breaststroke and freestyle) is easy, at least if you take a few 30 sec. breaks here and there. we should do it!

i have been looking into distances, and it turns out i didn't run 4 miles yesterday, it was more like 3.2 miles. it just seemed longer because i was so cold!! next sunday i'll run a 3.74 mile route to the gym/pool, then the next week 4.54,

8k is just a smidge under 5 miles. it's like 4.97 miles or something along those lines.
