To figure out the BPM, do you actually count the beats for 10 seconds and then multiply by 6? My step class has a disclaimer on the schedule stating that the class is faster than the recommended 128 BPM. 128 BPM seems so slow! Do people actually do step that slow? I don't see how you could get a good workout at that pace.

I find stepping at 128bpm to be too slow, definitely, but you can exaggerate your moves and still get a pretty good workout. What I really don't like about stepping slow is that your leg muscles get tired much more easily.

Now here's a question for you guys:

The pitch thingamagig on the CD player goes in increments of 0.1 (e.g. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, etc) so let's say I put in a 128bpm CD and crank up the pitch to 5.0 does that mean the speed is now 133bpm?

128 is REALLY slow! I know it's the regulation but I tried a tape that went from 128-130 and it was way to slow.

We only have a pitch for the tape, not the CD at one gym.

You can't figure out BPM by counting but all musicians have a device called a metronome that measures BPM.

i like to pitch those type of hi/lo cds down so they warm up at around 135ish and finish up around 145ish. remember, you can also adjust the speed during class - i do that sometimes, just pitch it down a bit when it starts to get too fast.

155bpm is impossible for kickboxing. i don't know what that instructor was doing, but it wasn't kickboxing.

yes you can figure out BPM by counting - count how many beats you hear in 10 seconds and multiply by 6 and that's approximate. (to be exact, you'd have to count how many beats in a whole minute, and that just takes too darn long.) it's just like taking a pulse, but the "pulse" is the music, not your heart.

I can't pitch it unless I record it as a tape.

I'm a firm believer in step being done to reebok guidelines speed...I feel that I get more of an intense workout when I"m not going so fast.
