I max out at 128 & kick some serious butt doing so. I forewarn classes that the class will probably be slower than they're used to but because the slower tempo allows them to move safely through a greater range of motion w/ more power and control that they'll work as hard, if not harder than they're used to. I'm consistently told by the poo-poo-ers, once they give it a chance, that they've never worked so hard in a cardio class.
The same thing applies to hi/lo, although i'll take some groups up to 153. I usually max out at 148. In KB I use 128 sometimes, but usually 134 to 140 BPM.
My opinion is that I was the one trained/educated to lead the class, I'm being paid for my knowledge. Tempo guidelines, etc. were determined through extensive research, testing, trial & error and leader & participant feedback. I'm also paid to meet, within reason, the needs of the majority of the participants. If folks want personal attention they can hire me, or someone else, as a trainer. I always listen to & consider any request, concerns & feedback I receive, but then weigh it w/ the wants & needs of others AND my professional knowledge. Things like tempo I'm pretty strict about but volume - if someone wants it altered I'll make a minor adjustment, if they still want it changed I get a concensus before moving on - like a quick show of hands as to who agrees. My classes are a democratic dictatorship {{{teehee}}}. ;-)

I'm glad that you don't give in to the "poo-poo-ers".
