I used to hate it when instructors had notes because they would pause to read them. I now have an instructor for step who has it written out in code in huge letters in just one big page. You would never know that she uses the notes because she doesn't make it obvious. I think if you can do it like her than that is the best. I honestly don't ever want to teach step because I couldn't memorize a routine. Heck, I can't remember it while I'm doing it in class.
Ah, one of the perks of being a veteran instructor is having so many routines in my head that i can pick and choose, or just make things up as I go. Unfortunately, this works against me now that I'm teaching 'brand name' classes too because they're pre-choreographed by someone else & I have to memorize every little detail, including a 'big finish' for each track.
that's what i do at the YMCA, too. (at the other gyms, i usually memorize the choreography well enough that i don't need notes.) i don't think anyone could tell that i look at them, but they can definitely tell if i don't use notes and forget where i am! i always try to memorize the choreography, but use the notes as back up, especially while building up to the final choreography. i can memorize the final 32 count patterns pretty easily, but it's harder when you are in the middle of breaking things down. plus, all the options for people who don't like impact, etc.
i don't like when step instructors hold papers in their hand while teaching. i just find it distracting.

Paula
My favorite step instructor has notes on hand during her classes.
I guess as long as it's done smoothly, it's not a problem.
