Giving up foods...

I think I'm becoming even MORE of a food freak...

I've realized that I am slowing giving up foods that I don't think are healthy but previously found a place in my diet. I firmly believe that there is room for pretty much anything in a healthy and well-balanced diet, but I think I am refining my definition even more.

I have given up junky cereals. I used to keep them around and have a bowl for dessert on some evenings. I haven't bought any in a while and I really haven't missed them. I have occasionally raided DH's Honey Nut Cheerios, but that's about it. I'm on the fence as to whether my Frosted Mini-wheats will make the cut or not. I'm leaning towards cutting it but DH thinks that's a bit overboard since they're full of fiber.

I also gave up cool whip. I haven't found a decent substitute yet, but there is none in my freezer.

We bought some lime sherbet for a punch that we made for our housewarming party. I used to LOVE lime sherbet and was happy that we had some leftover. When I tried it, I didn't like it at all. It tasted way too artificial and full of chemicals. I guess that's the result of avoiding processed foods. When I manage to locate our ice cream maker, I'm going to make my own.

I have also cut way back on my diet soda. I still have it now and then, but I don't have it with dinner every single night anymore.

Oddly enough, giving these things up hasn't been that hard. I just don't buy them and don't seem to miss them all that much. I do miss my romaine and my protein pudding when we're out of lettuce and cottage cheese. Sick, I tell you. :)

Eating mindfully takes less thought when you've been doing it for a long time.

Yes you are sick! :) Actually, I admire you, I wish I had the will power.

Good Job!

I totally agree! It's not a diet it is just they way I eat. My boyfriend loves his McDonalds and he got chicken nuggets and I was like let me try one, I literally have not had McDonalds in 7 years. I ate one nugget and thought "I am not missing out on anything" You lose your cravings for foods you stop eating.

I wish I were that "sick" . . .

I try to give up food that is bad for me, but I start craving it more and when there's a holiday or celebration, I go overboard!

I met with a nutritionist last month and she recommended I go on the Pitta Pacifying Diet. I've started out slowly, so I don't "shock" my system. Plus, I think I need to get things "out of my system". I've bought Trader Joe's cookies to wean myself off of my cookie-fix (no trans-fat, that's good, right?) And nutritious snacks like sweet potato chips to ease me out of the need to snack.

Anyway, I hope that one day I will truely know how you feel. You are an inspiration to me Gymrat! My ultimate food goal is to not miss the stuff that's bad for me!

It's not sick. There are lots of people who are the same way. I'm the same way. There are a lot of foods that I don't eat anymore- not because I don't like them, but because they're just not good for you. And I don't miss them at all. I almost NEVER drink soda- seriously, once in a blue moon, and then I'm picky about the kind I have. It's gotten to the point where I don't like soda anymore. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've had pudding, and I hadn't had cool-whip in YEARS, until when I was dating Wes, and he used to get it to put on waffles. After I told him how bad it was for you, even he stopped eating it altogether. And I buy my cereal exclusively from Trader Joe's.

I think people like us, who are very invested in staying healthy, can be this way, very easily. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's funny though, because when I go to my best friend's house, for example, there's usually nothing I'd want to eat. As much as I try and convert people, it never works...sigh :)

Wow! I can't believe ya'll think that Honey Nut Cheerios, mini-wheats, and Honey bunches of oats are junk food. Those are what I eat when i think I am eating healthy. Lol, I thought I was doing good because I never buy kool-aid. My mom gave me a hard time this weekend because I don't keep koolaid in the house for the kids. Why should I? I don't want them to grow up to eat like me. I'm gonna send them to summer camp at Jean's house :)

When I was little, the kinds of cereals we were allowed to have were things like Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Life, Honey Bunches of Oats, etc. NONE of the sugary things, like Fruit Loops, Captain Crunch, Fruit Pebbles, etc. It's just now that I'm older, I'd prefer a cereal that has more fiber and protein, etc, and the stuff at the "health" food grocery stores fit the bill better. Plus, most cereal at Trader Joe's (can't say the same for Whole Foods) is like $2 cheaper than the same size box of the national brand crap.
