Well, this was 20 years ago, not recently so it wasn't about anti-Americanism of today

i don't know enough about the relationship between Taiwan and China to comment on that, but most of Europe physically looks the same as most US citizens. Really, most of the world could be from the US if you just go by physical features. and there are many English-speaking countries other than the US. but you never hear of people from Guyana, for instance, or even England being worried about being mistaken for US citizens. so why are Canadians so worried about it? if they were just being proud of their heritage by wearing the flag, that would be fine, but that's not why they do it - they do it because they don't want to be associated with the negative stereotypes that are applied to people from the US. but if they fit the stereotype, it's not because they are being mistaken for an obnoxious American because they speak English, they are being mistaken for an obnoxious American because they are looking like/dressing like/acting like an obnoxious American. it's not just that we both speak English, but we are alike in many ways, ways that are based not on coincidence of language but on conscious choices about what kind of clothes we wear, how we act, what kind of interests we have, etc. - just looking at a random English-speaking person from ANY

If they were loud and obnoxious, then they'd be considered loud and obnoxious Canadians which would be better (for Americans)
