How much do you tip a hairstylist?

I didn't have to deal w/ tipping the person who washed my hair because the stylist did it this time but that also brings up what to tip her and whether it comes out of the stylist's tip which I think it should.

i don't think it should - it's a totally different service than what the stylist is providing (and being tipped for providing). but that never happens at my salon, none of the stylists or colorists ever wash hair.

I think the average tip percentage for a hairstylist is 15%, and 2-5 dollars for the assistant that shampoos your hair or helps with the treatment. I don't understand why you would need to tip the owner unless he/she was the one cutting your hair. And even if she were the one cutting your hair, it's not always necessary that you tip her since she's making the most profit from the services and treatments - whereas the stylists have to pay the owner for their stations and so depend a lot on the tips. Personally, I usually tip 15-20% depending on whether I'm just getting a simple cut or a more complex and time-consuming treatment.

That's what I meant about tipping the owner, when she's the stylist.

I've been to salons where I've had others wash and some where the stylist washes.

so are you only going to tip your stylist $5 on a $40 haircut if you have to tip the hair washer $3? i don't think that's right. the stylist should get at LEAST %15 regardless of who washes your hair. if the stylist washes it herself, you can consider it a free courtesy or tip her

No, but I'd tip both more total than 20% total but a little less than 20% for the stylist.

Oh, and I have to say that I don't normally spend that much on my hair which is one reason I'm not going back.

Ugh, I don't know why I was so defensive about this.
