Fruit Tantrum

Let me start by saying that the fact that I'm even eating fruit is impressive. I never liked it as a kid and shunned it during my teenage years and most of my twenties. But, since the quality of my diet has changed and I do my best to get all of my macro and micronutrients as naturally as possible, I have incorporated fruit back into my diet. (Also, in all honesty, giving up most things with processed sugar has made fruit taste a LOT better.)

I have even branched out from my bananas. I love bananas but alas, they are full of starchy carbs so I don't make them a staple of my diet. (Seriously, I love bananas. You could leave me on a desert island with my 'nanners, peanut butter and maybe some chocolate and not worry about coming back.) I've been eating pineapple (fresh even!), cherries (love the rainer ones but they are so expensive and so seasonal), nectarines, blueberries, strawberries, and cantaloupe.

I'm just tired of my fruit going bad. :( I bought 4 nectarines on Saturday and ended up throwing out 2 of them because they got overripe and 1 of them because it tasted terrible. This is how I get very discouraged with my fruit. I finished up the last of my rainier cherries this morning and since at least a quarter of the bag wasn't good, I probably won't buy them again this season. It's just frustrating because I had my cheese and fruit snack all planned and then the fruit is terrible. Out of desperation, I got out some frozen pineapple chunks that I'd originally purchased for smoothies, microwaved it and ate it. WWAGRD? Haha... :)

Thanks for indulging me in my fruit tantrum. If this is the biggest problem in my life, then I have it pretty good, I think.

I have that same problem, too. I have to go to the store every other day or the fruit goes bad.

I completely understand your frustration! I love fruit, but it always went bad because dh would not eat it. Now, I have two extra mouths to eat it too. Now my frustration is the little boogers eat all my fruit...especially my strawberries!

last week i made a special trip to the store just to buy a watermelon, and i got home and cut it open and it was rotten. but fruit is so worth the trouble - the best things in life are worth a bit of hardship to enjoy.

i don't think millcreek's street vendor watermelon is precut.

i actually think watermelon is one of the easiest fruits to prepare - now that i'm really used to cutting it up and i have it down to

me too, i cut the rind totally off and cut it into rectangular chunks to eat with a fork. i think the trick is having a knife that's big enough.

what i do when cutting a large oval melon (technique is different for small watermelons that are shaped like a ball): cut the watermelon in half the short way (so the cut edge is a circle, not a big oval). put one half aside, turn the other half cut side down on the cutting board. slice off rind on outside edge making straight downward cuts going all the way around the circle, sort of like if you were peeling a cucumber with a knife. don't be super picky about cutting too much off with each slice, the outside part is less flavorful than the center anyway. then turn this half watermelon onto its side (one of the sides you just cut the rind off of) and in one slice, slice off the end of the watermelon, taking off the last remaining rind in one slice. chop de-rinded watermelon into large chunks by making several slices one way and then the other. repeat with other half of watermelon.

i don't like lugging it from the store either, that's why i was particularly pissed about making a special trip and lugging it home and finding the whole thing rotten.

We should learn Jen's technique.
