Since Paula's epiphany, I've been thinking about our eating habits as we grew up, keeping in mind that back then we didn't know nearly as much as we do now and that whole wheat anything was not generally available unless you went into specialty stores...

for me, it was pretty much the same as what paula described. there was essentially no effort made to eat healthy foods and no foods were limited, except i had to at least eat some of my dinner (meat and starch and maybe an ounce of frozen vegetable drenched in margarine and/or cheese) before dessert.

1) What was a normal lunch for you at school when you packed?
Usually a thermos of soup, but I remember some really bad lunches like, pork jerkey and white bread and butter. In high school I'd either have McDonalds or a bowl of soup and a plate of fries. Good lord.

2) What kinds of snacks did you have?
Ice cream, chips, cookies, cake, all the bad stuff.

3) Did you have dessert after dinner?
Nope.

Since I lived in Korea for most of my childhood, I think for the most part I had a healthy diet, since Korean food is heavy on the veggies and rice, and not too much fat is used in cooking.

1. So a normal lunch at school would have been a simple Korean lunch with some white rice with one or two side dishes. I do remember the occasional cup of ramen noodles my mom packed for me - I still give her grief about that!

2. I had a lot of Korean chips or cookies, which probably don't have a lot of fat, but do have tons of MSG. I remember craving Lay's Sour Cream and Onion chips, since those were so rare to come about then.

3. We definitely ate tons of fruit after dinner. Just like you Jean, I also enjoy eating fruit as dessert now much more than anything else (but I do like me some banana cream cheesecake once in a while!).

1) What was a normal lunch for you at school when you packed?

Peanut butter sandwich or mustard and cheese sandwich. Chips. Soda. Cookies.

2) What kinds of snacks did you have?

Fruit roll-ups, those granola bar things that they tried to dress-up as candy bars (and were about as bad for you), donuts, cookies

3) Did you have dessert after dinner?

Almost always. My mom usually had Breyer's chocolate ice cream in the freezer. I would get a huge bowl of it, add tons of chocolate syrup and chocolate chips if we had them.

I threw my fruit in the trash too.

But I still love Pop-tarts. :)

In high school, I'd eat a Little Debbie brownie and fries for lunch. Our cafeteria also had REALLY good rolls so I'd usually get a roll too.

Little Debbies...in highschool I would skip the milk and use my milk money to buy a fudge round or a swiss roll, good stuff. I was never a big drinker (my coach used to call me a camel because I would never drink anything), so I didn't miss not having a drink at lunch.
