Does my family eat as clean as I do? OMG, no (not for lack of trying on my part). Dh has a jones for potato chips, fudgesicles and beer (he usually drinks the non-alcoholic variety though) that never seems to abate. # 1 Son, like almost every teenager, has a wicked sweet tooth. They actually eat pretty well since I'm in control of groceries, but I don't like force feed them my type of diet so theirs is more moderate (they had pizza last night). They don't get any white foods (refined flour, sugar, rice, milk, etc.) except for potatoes or yoghurt on occasion and we eat lots of produce, whole grains and nuts (DH eats trail mix like it going out of style, luckily he has the metabolism to handle it). I bake a lot of tasty, healthy goodies, but they then binge on them, so I don't know how good that is. Exercise? DH practically lives on the golf course, regardless of weather, goes to the driving range regularly during winter and walks on his lunch hour year round. #1 Son weight trains, although not religiously & loves DDR. So they don't live & breathe the healthy lifestyle but are moderately active and eat cleaner than most I guess.

So may I ask why you limit grains? Not passing judgement, just curious. Grains are an important part of ones diet nutritionally, but I know some folks don't process them as well as most. I know you eat a fair amount of produce so roughage/fibre shouldn't be a big concern but do you supplement to make up for the lost nutrients?

I love wraps, you can do just about anythng w/ them. I even make healthy crepe-like dessert/breakfast wraps (ww wrap w/ a spritz of oil all over, filled w/ apples, brown sugar & cinnamon baked and served topped w/ vanilla yoghurt). Luckily, there's huge variety of wraps available up here (off the top of my head there is: regular white flour ones in plain, sundried tomato, spinach, herb, blueberry, apple cinnamon; ww; whole grain; sprouted grain; "carb-watch"; and corn). I personally only eat the ww, whole grain & sprouted grain ones and occasionally treat the guys to hand-held crepes (fruit wrap w/ a little jam spread on it, filled w/ fresh fruit then nuked just long enough to warm it through).

Enjoy your veggie wrap. I may be having one today since I still have an avocado left & pick up my order from from my organic wholesaler which includes two more. I think we'll be having veg. burritos w/ guacamole for supper tonight. ;-)

Your family seems to be eating quite well, especially when you compare them to other families.

I know that I function better when I watch my intake of starchy carbs although I'm not bad w/ whole grains but I've noticed over the years that some people just don't process carbs as well as others.

Lunches. I knew I forgot to reply to something. #1 Son is old enough that he walks home & makes his own lunch now (ack, he's in high school - I feel too young to be the mother of a high school student :-P), usually soup, sandwich or a bagel and juice. When I packed lunches (still do on occasion) I make a wrap or PB&J on multigrain bread and throw in a juice box and snack bag of carrot sticks or fruit. Forget the paper bag. They make insulated, compartmentalized lunch kits now, some w/ their own cold pack, and some schools have a microwave available for students. So lunches are pretty easy to do right, but I've noticed that alot of kids bring prepackaged stuff like Lunchables which are pretty bad. Lots of schools up here have a canteen or cafeteria, unfortunately they usually offer things like hot dogs, chips and the like. My son's school had that stuff plus burgers, fries, poutine (fries w/ gravy & cheese curds - a uniquely Canadian and surprisingly tasty delicacy), pyrohy and candy. Not a single nutritious item on the menu, luckily the novelty wore thin pretty quick w/ my son & he prefers to bring a lunch. I don't know what his high school offers yet.
