Thoughts on WL surgery and teens...

I know this could potentially be a hot button topic, but I wanted to throw this out there and see what you all think...
On several talk shows recently, I've seen the case of a mother and her twin boys who are having gastric bypass (one of the twins had it and the other I believe is scheduled for surgery). The mother speaks openly about the fact that she had it years ago, yet she is still visibly very much overweight. The twin who already has the surgery has lost a great deal of weight and is very happy with the results. The other twin is looking forward to the same success.

Isn't it truly scary the lengths people are willing to go to to be thin? Doesn't that speak volumes about how messed up our societal values are? That someone would reduce themselves to eating about a cup of food per day just be thin... Of course, I say this as someone who has taken drastic measures in her life to lose weight, but nothing that drastic.
I don't know if I agree about the information. My experience as a trainer is that either a) people know what to do and just don't or b) people get overwhelmed by all the conflicting information out there and don't want to take the time to sift through it and figure out what's sensible.
I'm sensing we could have a field day on Dr. Phil. *giggle*
How old is teen? I don't agree on any plastic surgery for anybody under 18. First of all, they are not done developing. Second, they are not mature enough to make life changing decisions. Third, there are too many risks for such a young person. Fourth, you are teaching them the easy way out.
Now, I think there are situations where it is okay (cleft lips, health issues, accident scars...), but for the most part it is not needed. It annoys me when young girls get boob jobs for their birthdays and stuff. You are just teaching them that looks are important. I say let them mature and decide for themselves what is important. I waited until I was 21. my boobs were not going to grow anymore, and it was important to me because I looked nothing like a woman. Clothes didn't fit...Plus, I was married, and I knew that I was doing it for me, not to get the attention of men.
I'll step off the soap box now.
