Shopping

I mentioned last Friday that I was going to go shopping and I'm happy to report that I actually had a good time. DH went with me and he promised to be good - and he really was! It's times like this that I lament not being able to go with my mom because she'll hand me stuff that I would NEVER pick out and then I end up liking it. I have to say, one of the items that came home with me was courtesy of DH.

I have hated shopping for a long time as shopping often turned into a self-loathing experience for me. But, I've been working with my counselor on this and we've made a lot of progress! I actually liked how my body looked in some of the things that I tried on. I got depressed a few times, but it wasn't because of my body - it was because I had trouble finding things I liked.

So, shopping with my "new" body is a lot like shopping with my old body, except that things are more pronounced. I've always been curvy and have always had boobs and hips. Well, thanks to the surgery, my boobs actually look quite a bit bigger. (Once I went to the surgeon's office for a check-up and I asked the nurse how much they wanted me to disrobe and she said "You had your boobs done, right?" HA! Nope.) I am currently a 36/38 D depending on the bra and I think I look generally proportioned but I wear a lot of t-shirts that really seem to emphasize things. :P

I realized that I get into a clothing rut... Aside from my personal trainer clothes, I wear jeans or khakis with a tight-fitting v-neck tshirt. I was trying to get out of my box a little bit and DH helped me do that. I'm not really a trendy person and unfortunately, I'm limited to stretchy knit tops. I SO love the look of jeans with a fitted button down white shirt, but I cannot wear those because the buttons pop. It seemed like so many of the clothes we saw were just super-trendy and COMPLICATED. I don't really think I'm lazy person, but to properly wear one shirt over another so that the first shirt appropriately peeks out is just TOO MUCH WORK. (Does this mean I'm getting old?)

Per everybody's suggestions from last time, I did go to higher end stores but didn't find a THING. I ended up at my old haunts and did pretty well there. I got a new pair of jeans, a red long sleeved t-shirt with a little doohicky on it (I don't usually wear red), a green faux suede shirt and a eggshell camisole to go underneath it. Also got a new pair of trail runners which I think I'm going to return as they gave me terrible blisters on Saturday.

:)

Have you ever considered getting a personal shopper?

The places I tend to shop do not have personal shoppers. :P Most of them don't even have an attendant in the dressing room!

I wouldn't say they look perfect, but a good bra can do wonders! I think they might also look a little fake because my waist looks pretty small in comparison to my boobs. Although, my hips basically match my boobs so I think it's pretty obvious that they haven't been surgically enhanced, but maybe not.

I'm sure the "What Not To Wear" people will stop by my house after yours. :P Although, I'd rather get caught by the fashion police for being boring (to which I plead no contest) than being black-barred in Cosmo.

i'm so over trying to look good. i was never a huge fan of shopping, but now i don't even care if i have cute clothes or not. as i get older i get less and less interested in trying to look cute. it's all about comfort and practicality. i've even taken to wearing big baggy oversized tee shirts again, like we wore back in the early 90s. and i'm back to long straight limp hair like we had back in the 90s. hmmm, come to think of it, i think it's 90s nostalgia. yes, that's it, i'm ahead of the curve on rehashing the grunge trend, just like i was ahead of the curve with the 80s trend. i wish doc martens made vegan boots.

anyway, a few weeks ago a couple of vegan friends were talking about shoe shopping, and i told them how i just have two pairs of shoes: one pair that i wear to work every day in the summer, and another pair that i wear to work every day in the winter. they were so aghast and one said she was too addicted to "sex and the city" to ever be so blase about shoes. but they are comfortable enough to walk for miles in them, durable enough to stand up to every day use, and they match (well enough) everything i own. so why do i need any other pairs of shoes? all the other shoes i wear other than those two are either 1) some kind of flip flop or 2) some kind of athletic shoe, though i do have to admit i own a very large array of flip flops and athletic shoes.

Count me in on the athletic shoe and flip flop camp! You can never own too many pairs of either and they're so versatile. I so love buying those kinds of shoes, but don't care much for "regular" shoes.

Jen, you can't be retro 90's unless you're breaking out the flannel on top of the raggedy concert t-shirt. Are you there yet? :)

it's still too hot for flannel, but i was seriously considering the possibility when i wrote that. we'll see in a few weeks.

i did this survey on myspace about music, and one of the questions was what song summed me up, and the best i could think of was "smells like teen spirit". i'm telling you i'm all about the grunge these days.

btw-are any of you all on myspace?

That's funny! I'm too picky about how things fit or I'd love that. I'm too short for clothes and 90% of what I try one doesn't fit because it's too long or too low cut.

I should clarify that a "bunch" of stuff in Jean-lingo means two shirts and two pair of shoes. I'm taking one pair of shoes back and maybe one shirt.

Jean,
