Newbie Needs help with nay-sayers!

Hi -

First I'd like to say that I am VERY glad I found this board. I went through some of your comments about this board and I think I am at the right place.

I am 34, married and started working out a year and a half ago. I started out just two times a week, but I am now at my Y 6 days a week doing cardio 5 times and strength/resistance exercise 3 times a week. I have lost 71 pounds so far and have about 30 more to go. I feel great!

My problem - There is a group of us who workout everyday at the same times. We aren't friends (I don't even know all of their names - we just kinda nod at each other), more like "workout associates" who are the bigger girls at the gym. Since I have started to shape up, these girls have really said some hurtful things to me and they have a kinda snippy tone in their voice. Things like "Oh, haven't you done enough exercise today?" "You really work too hard!" "Are you doing a class AFTER you have already done the machines?" Today, one of the girls said, "I am tired today; could you be less energetic? I can't take it."

I am not sure of what to say to them, but I found myself doing less after the last "energetic" comment. Help!

Just smile and turn up the volume on your headphones. :) Working out with music is a great way to keep people away from you and you can always pretend you didn't hear if they do make comments. Sounds like those gals are trying to make themselves feel better by bringing you down ~ don't be a part of it.

Congrats on your weight loss! Sounds like you're doing an amazing job. Welcome to the group. :)

Gymrat76!!!

Thank you. I feel so much better just knowing that there are people who understand. Your advise about the music is AWESOME and ON POINT - I just bought a new MP3 player specifically for my workout (it is waterproof so that I can use it in the pool) and I just loaded it with my music now.

I am going back to the Y tonight!

Hi there!

If any of those comments is REALLY over the line, I would consider reporting it to management. Most clubs have policies protecting members from being harrassed by other members.

meljoan - I am looking for an MP3... what did you get? :-)

I've only ever gone to the gym really early, so there's no one there! But I will be going soon at busier times, so I'll benefit from your post too...;-)

Hi Coelura -

I got my first MP3 player from Tower Records. It is a Creative Zen and is great! The water proof one I just got is a Oregon Scientific MP120/ON128C 128 MB Waterproof MP3 Player with FM Tuner & Voice recorder. The orange one I got was $70.95 at amazon.com, but there are others as well.

They sell MP3 players anywhere they sell electronics - from Best Buy to Wal-Mart

Let me know what you think!

Hey -

Most of the comments are not over the line; just nasty and snippy. But, if they get to that level, I'll take your advise.

Thanks!

Thank you for the advise! I really like this site and felt better just typing out how I felt and hearing from all of you. The surveys and information are right on point for me.

The ladies are not really friends, in fact, I don't even know all of their names. It is just a situation where we all workout at about the same time and had more than 20-50 lbs to lose. So, I would see them in the evenings and we would sort of nod at each other. It is just recently that they have started to make little comments and it was starting to effect how hard and how long I would workout.

I think you are right about finding a better support system. I am going to look into that today.

I really think that you should just ignore these women. They are obviously jealous and don't like to see someone progressing faster than them. You should see their comments as positive reinforcement. They have obviously noticed your weight loss and overall improvement in your fitness levels. As long as you are not overtraining, don't change anything just because of what they think. Instead be a role model to them and just keep doing what you are doing. If someone made a comment like the energentic one I probably would have laughed and said "sorry, no can do, deal with it". But I am a little more sarcastic than most. Don't take their comments to heart.

Keep up the good work!

Jody
