Thanksgiving Food Temptations?

Are you tempted by most Thanksgiving foods? I'm looking at the menu my SIL has planned (it's potluck) and nothing looks worth the calories. Well, I'll be making dessert but probably pie and I'm not a big pie person.

I enjoy turkey, gravy, mashed taters and rolls. Everything else I can take or leave. My MIL's sister (aunt-in-law?) is cooking this year and I have no idea what she'll be making. She's a fabulous cook though although she does a lot of southern food and I'm not typically a huge fan of southern-style food.

Since we're not cooking this year, DH and I are going to do something active on turkey day morning. Go do a hike or a walk or something. Get out and enjoy the fresh air.

I like the basics the most on Thanksgiving. I enjoy it more if I cook it knowing it is lower in fat and calories. Give me the white meat turkey, my low fat mashed potatoes, defatted gravy, no butter in it stuffing, baked mashed potoatoes. I make my own cranberry orange relish. I will probably make some baked sweet potatoes too. Then, I always make a medley of cauliflower and carrots, sometimes in a reduced fat cheese sauce

On second thought, I say I don't like pies but with Amy the major baker here, it reminds me that I love a great pie w/ a good crust (that super flakey type) but I can't remember the last time I've had one like that.

I like the sweet potatoes, but not the sickly sweet kind with marshmallows etc. I *love* the pies... my sister always made a broccoli cheese casserole that I love too, that's pretty unhealthy. But this year, we're going to San Francisco, and while we were on the waiting, we just got reservations for Thanksgiving dinner at Millennium!! I'm so excited - I have both of their cookbooks and have loved everything I've made from them. It's vegan fancy food... so I'll be safe eating whatever they bring out.

That reminds me Jean, you were asking about too much flour toughening the crust... it isn't too much flour, really, it's too much flour "worked in" - so pat and roll as efficiently as possible. BTW, the way we mix the mix (flour/salt/fat) with the water isn't kneading, but you put it in a bowl, get a big spoon, and turn on the cold tap at a slow stream. Set the bowl under the flow on the edge of the sink, and keep turning it while you make short tossing strokes with the spoon, just until it comes together. If you work it too much it will get tough. Good luck if you try it! :-)

Do you use cold tap water?

If you're going with whole wheat, definitely use the pastry flour... but with white flour it's not as obvious a difference, so use what you have if you don't feel like buying something special.

I have a pie crust recipe that's made with sour cream (goes on a cranberry/blueberry pie) that is awesome. Sweet potato pecan pie sounds delish - let me know how it is if you try it!
