I bought some surprisingly nice grapes yesterday. In the winter I stick with apples, bananas etc.

Pears are usually still pretty good. Pomegranates are a nice change. Try kiwi and persimmon too. Otherwise, I think your regular apples & bananas! :-)

I love persimmons but haven't found good ones this year!

I buy three or so at once (flea market here has them cheaper than the grocery). Cut the top off and slice just the skin into "wedges". Put the whole thing in a bowl of water. Peel away a wedge, and pull off the seeds. The white stuff floats and the arils (seeds etc.) sink. When you're done, skim the white pithy stuff off, then drain and you've got a beautiful ruby pile. Sprinkle them on anything that could use a little color or crunch. But I agree - too many can be hard!

Do you eat the whole seed or do you eat around the pit?

The pit? I don't remember a pit. It's just little seeds - I eat them.

The center of the seeds have something like a little pit.

Oh, now I know what you mean. Yes, the arils (the technical name which I just learned the other day) each have a seed inside. But they crunch, not like raspberry or grape seeds, more easily edible! :-)

Well, I wish I would have known that before I left that great salad in the restaurant!
