What do you think b-day party idea?

My DD's birthday is coming up at the end of the month and we are trying to plan her birthday party. We have discussed various ideas, and my DD had wanted to take her friends to a movie and then have them sleepover. (Dinner either at home or a restaurant.) Problem.. I don't see any appropriate preteen girls movies coming out in the next month. Unless Pirates of the Carabean (they have all seen) is still in theaters I don't see a thing to take them to. If we could wait till mid-Oct. --- Driving Lessons (Rupert Grint who plays Ron in the Harry Potter filsm) "might" be OK... I am not sure it's too sexually explicit. It seems that September is not a time kid movies are released. But DD really wants to have her pary in the end of September.

So I was looking for alternative. I found a community theater that is doing a showing of "Your a Good Man Charlie Brown", it's a Broadway Musical based on the Charlie Brown strips. Since it's a community theater it's cheeper than a fancy production, but it's still more expensive than a movie. Do you think 12 & 13 year old girls would enjoy this? It seems that Septmember is a bit shy on plays/productions as well. I figure she could invite 5-6 girls. The problem is that I would have to get tickets ahead of time, and thus would need to get girls to commit very early. Is this something your tween's would find interesting?

My tween would be. She's been to the ballet a few times (smaller productions) as well as musicals like Cats and bigger ballets. She basically loves anything that is like doing grown-up stuff. So going out for dinner and a play is "very" grown-up.

I'm not familiar with that play, but maybe you could do some research to make sure it isn't a grown-up version where all the jokes will go over their heads.

I think it is a neat idea and an original one as well!

I just had a birthday party for my 11 (now 12) years old this past weekend! Depending on where you live, and if you have space, you could have a backyard campout! My DD and some girls from her soccer team loved it!!!

I had them come over to the house at 3:30 and they went swimming for a couple of hours. After swimming they came in and decorated their own cupcakes (instead of a cake) while we cooked the pizza. After they decorated the cupcakes, they ate pizza, then headed outside to play! They started with a box of old dress up clothes of my DD's and had a fashion show for each other! Of course, I had to take photos!

After they played dress-up for a while, I had them play one of the pre-planned games my DD and I had set up! We did a balloon popping game, where they each had to pull balloons out of the kiddie pool (no water!) and sit on them to pop them. Whomever came up with the "Winner" tag, won a prize! This can be a noisy game, with the balloons popping, and the girls screaming as they pop the balloons!!!!

Afte the balloon pop, we played another game! Whipped cream and bubblegum... Place a piece of bubble gum on a plate (Bazooka works best because it's flat!) and then cover the plate with whipped cream! Each girl has to use only her mouth to find the gum and chew it up. First one to blow a real bubble wins a prize! Lots of fun because the girls get messy, but they can also eat the whipped cream and they love it!!!

It was getting late, so the girls headed to the tent to play "I've Got a Secret", which is a take on 20 questions! Something they can do on their own, and have fun! Since it was getting late, we decided to play the other two pre-planned games the next morning!

After breakfast they got dressed while I set up the other two games. I did a "What is It?" game, and put different things in bowls and they had to feel the stuff with their hand and no peeking -- guess what it is, and whomever has the most right, wins a prize!!! Mash a banana and then warm it a bit in the microwave -- that'a good one!!!! They loved that game! Then we did "The Tray" as my DD called it! I collected several miscellaneous items from throughout the house and put them on the table (covered, of course). The gilrs had 20 seconds to look at the items before I covered them back up. Whomever guessed the most items, wins a prize!!!

The girls had a good time, and even though it seemes like they didn't do a whole lot, they were busy the entire time!!!

I hope you can get something planned for the end of the month. I put this thing together in less than a week, and they seemed to enjoy it! Just don't stress if your timetable gets messed up! I was supposed to start at 4:00 to go swimming, and two fo the girls didn't show up until 5:30, and one showed up at 7:30!!! They had fun anyway!!!!

Just my 2 cents worth!

This musical is family friendly, but not as childish as it might seem. I have seen it but don't remember the details.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have done something similar in past years and DD is looking for something a bit different. Can't do a campout in the backyard, my backyard has no where to set up a tent. But I do have sleepovers where they all crash in the living room. DD's parties the past few years have all been sleepovers. In fact I will have DD's girl scout troop, crashing in my living room this Friday. We were looking for somthing a bit more "grown-up" without being too grown-up and a bit different. One year we did the evening swim, movie, pizza and games. Last year they just went out to dinner.
