Codename:KND - Does your kid watch it?

My daughter just called me from home (I'm at work) all upset because my husband turned off the TV show she was watching: Codename: Kids Next Door. He told her it was too violent and she can no longer watch it. Needless to say, she is beyond upset - it seems that she and her friends make games up from the characters of this show and now she says she won't be able to play their "games" with her friends.

I personally have not seen the show but I trust my husband's judgement (I find most of Cartoon Network's cartoons too violent so I'm sure he's right!!).

My daughter is 10 years old. Does anyone out there let their kids watch this show?

Thank you for your input.

Debbie

Well, we've seen it a few times. But to be honest I couldn't tell you much about it. This what the website says about it:

Taking numbers instead of names, five heroic 10 year olds have formed a team called the Kids Next Door with one dedicated mission: to free all children from the tyrannical rule of adults.

I don't think Kristen has taken any interest in it. But its seems like a fantasy thing about kids who get the better of adults who always get their way. It has a trading card game as well I found. You can check it out at www.kidsnextdoor.com.

I'm pretty lax about stuff like that though. But maybe tell her that you will watch an episode yourself with your DH (watch a whole one alone, not just 2 minutes which can give a distorted view) and that you will then decide whether it is appropriate. So don't over-rule your DH, but tell her you will give it appropriate thought and analysis and then make a decision you think is best for her. At least that shows her you are open to examining the decision and that you aren't one of those "tyrannical adults". :-)

My son watches it a lot. (he's 9.5) It has what I would call "silly" violence. LIke they build "guns" out of household items that shoot ice cream at people and stuff like that. I'm not sure I would call it a violent cartoon. It's not like it's "coyote using dynamite to blow up road runner" violence.

Both my kids used to play KND. THey would build stuff and make forts. I always thought it was kind of neat.

I guess it depends on what you want your kids to be exposed to. I personally do not let my kids watch Ed, Edd, and Eddy because I find it stupid and just has no redeeming value at all. At least KND inspired my kids to use their imagination.....

I can tell you that DH and I are both strict on what we lat our kids watch. That said, we do not have a problem with our 10 yr old DD watching this show.

I'm almost too embarassed to say that my turning 13 next month son still likes that stupid show. Ugh! He's been watching it for for at least 2 or 3 years. I absolutely hate that he still enjoys watching it & thought he would be out growing it by now.
I agree with the previous poster...it has guns that shoot ice cream & stuff like that. I'm sort of lax on cartoons & personally don't think that the ones these days are any worst than the old Tom & Jerry, Road Runner, Bugs Bunny & etc.
Also, I'm probably a little odd when I say that I do on occasion enjoy watching Ed, Edd & Eddie plus The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy with him. Both of these are more violent, but at least they are funny as heck.

Thank you all for your quick and honest replies. I watched one episode of the show tonight and, quite frankly, I couldn't figure out what my husband thought was so bad! Was it stupid, yes! Was it BORING, yes! Was it, um, completely irritating and rediculous - YES!! But I did not find it "violent" at all.

After we discussed it, he agreed to let me watch two more episodes before deciding whether or not it was ok for her to watch.

I really think my hubby read way too much into what was going on because we had a completely different view on the show.

So... thank you very much for giving me your perspective (which is also MY perspective) on a very silly show which is obviously based on a child's fantasy world.

My daughter certainly appreciates it!!

XOXO

This would be more my concern:

"with one dedicated mission: to free all children from the tyrannical rule of adults."

That entire premise of the show would be reason why I would probably not be happy to have my daughter watch it (this is the first I've heard of it though, she really watches very little tv at all, and definitely none of the popular kid cartoon stuff).

The disrespect and attitude toward adult authority sounds like it would be a bigger issue than the violence (as you all here have described it.)

"with one dedicated mission: to free all children from the tyrannical rule of adults"

It is all silly though...One episode an "adult" was trying to change all the kids into girls. The "adults" are just the regular bad guys. There was an epidose where the villian was "the Common Cold". The kids were shooting him with orange juice. Another episode, and "evil" grandfather is forcing kids to make tapioca pudding. Another example, the villian downloaded broccoli into the kids treehouse mainframe. Everything started turning into brocoli and the only way to get rid of it was to eat it!!

I have watched an episode or two!!!LOL!

Hello Debbie, I've never heard of that show. Glad you and your hubby worked it out for your dd. I'm the strict one in the family and my dh is a little more lenient. Sometimes things can get kinda hairy as to what our tween can watch or not watch.
