"Can" she swallow a pill or "will" she swallow a pill? She won't but she has swallowed more than one piece of gum in her life and I keep telling her if she can swallow a wad of bubblegum she can swallow a pill. Sigh. I remember being afraid too, but I don't remember how I got over it. If they aren't very big she might try swishing it around with water in her mouth and throwing her head back and swallowing while the water is still moving? That way she won't feel the pill on her tongue and get freaked out? That's the only thing I can try and do for DD but hopefully someone here has a "trick" to help.
I'm with Tam on this one...can and will are two different stories! Matthew can take motrin jr with no problem, it's a very small pill. But he just had amoxicillan last month in the pill form and honestly the pills intimidated me. Why did they have to be so freaking big? Anyway, I tried everything to get him to just swallow the pill, stuffed it in a banana slice, put it in applesauce, put it in yogurt, cut it into thirds. The only way he would take the pill was to let it disolve in his mouth with lemonade. I would think that would be worse than any of the previous methods but he didn't care. Ten days of doing that twice a day and there was no way in heck I was ever getting him another prescription in pill form! LOL!
I had my daughters chew a small piece of bread and right before they swallowed put the pill in their mouth! Now my oldest (14) just dry swallows her medication? Hope that helps.
I have to cut them in half to get my kid to swallow them. But it took me forever to figure out how to do it.
I suggest making it small and tell her to drink something (water never worked with me) try juice or something with some taste. take the drink (don't swallow) put the pill in the mouth and then swallow. No tase and its small to go down easy. Good luck.
My daughter can only swallow small pills. She is good with it. She has practiced with candy. Wrong thing to say I know. But she started doing this on her own and she came to me one day and said watch. I thought yea. now no more liquid med. I was happy. but now i have to cut those big pills up. she refuses to take something big. Big to her is a regular asprin. I have to cut those in half. but hey she still takes them. Good luck
Kelsey learned to take her epilepsy meds in pill form in first grade. She practised with smarties and it only took a couple of times for her to get it. Tegan however is a completely different story. She will not take pills, when she gets bad cramps i have to buy her children's chewable. I said to her "for pete's sake you are almost 13 years old these are for little kids." She calmly turned to the back label where the dosage is located and showed me that she can take the chewables b/c she is not past the weight requirement for them to be effective. I tried one once when we were camping and they were disgusting. I would rather have a headache then ever take one of those things again. I keep saying i am going to have to get her m&m's for her to practise with (she hates smarties) but i keep forgetting until she needs them. Kelly
