I'm curious as to how many of you have put TV's (DVD player, VCR, Game systems) in your kid's rooms, and what your rules are surrounding them?

Both my kids Nic (10), and Alyssa (5) (and my Stepdaughter Jamie on the weekends - she's 9), have TV's in their rooms. Nic has a PS2/DVD player, and Alyssa has a VCR. They both pretty much fall asleep to TV every night. How do you all feel about that? Could this be affecting their sleep at all? I haven't noticed anything negative, but my MIL has said that it isn't a very good idea.

Thoughts?

My DD has a tv in her room because an elderly neighbor gave it to her just before he died. It was very sweet of him and I decided to take a wait and see approach. Because there is no cable in her room, and no reception, the tv can only be used for videos and such, which sets some natural limits - DVD movies come to an end.

I paid close attention for awhile, and did confirm that "falling asleep with tv on" takes about the same amount of time as the length of the movie! In other words, she was not falling asleep to the tv at all. She was too stimulated, and didn't fall asleep until the movie ended. Occasionally on a weekend I let her lounge in the living room watching tv, and she does fall asleep when her body absolutely insists. But it is MANY hours past a decent bedtime.

If she had access to cartoon network in her bedroom, I would probably have taken the tv out.

~They cannot watch the same show that is on somewhere else in the house for the sake of being alone.>>>

I'm interested to know more about this rule!

My husband and I recently had this discussion. We are in the middle of a major home renovation, and the kids are getting new rooms. I wanted the rooms wired for everything, and would eventually let them have computers and TV in the rooms. My husband is adamant that there be no computers or TV in the kids' bedrooms. He prefers they spend time in the living areas with us. He won the battle, but he has to make sure that there is a chase so that we can easily update the wiring should be change our mind

Jordyn has a TV, cable, a DVD player, a VCR, and her Game Cube all in her room. We don't really have any rules surrounding them because she really isn't home much to use any of them. She will go in and watch TV on the weekends or later at night on the weekends, but she never leaves it on when she goes to bed. If she is having trouble falling asleep she would rather read then watch the TV.

If I let them, my kids would all be watching "Drake and Josh" at the same time but in 3 different rooms! That is a waste of energy. They can all watch the same show in one room.

We only have one fully functional TV in our entire home, the main living area.
