Well it finanlly happened. Ds (13) had to shave for the first time this past weekend. It had been a long time coming but we put it off as long as we could. School pictures and the fact that the fuzz was now photographically noticable made it's mark on us. So dh took ds to Target to buy his first electric shaver.

It's hard to see him growing up so fast. Seems like just yesterday he was starting middle school and now he's shaving, fighting a loosing battle with uncontrolable acne and checking out what the local highschool has to offer before he goes there next year.

How did he like shaving? Quinn has a little fuzz on his upper lip, nothing to shave though.

Poor guy for have the acne! I know that's painful for you too. I posted here about Quinn having a huge pimple on his nose. I've called the doctor because he mentioned last time we were there that he could prescribe something that would be better. I have no idea what???

My 11 yr old started shaving her legs this fall and that was traumatic for me too. Funny how I never thought about boys starting to shave too, lol. I guess it comes from being in an all girl household(except for dh and the dog). Don't they just grow up too fast?

Alex is 13 but I'm hoping we still have a little while before shaving. I am so not ready for that!

We are trying one more over the counter thing to see if that makes a difference with the acne. If not I'll have to take him to a dermatologist and have something prescribed. I think the hardest part for him is that most of his friends till have fairly clear skin. A pimple here or there but not everywhere like he does.

He said it was ok. I think in a way he was sad to see the fuzz mustach go. His side burns dh had been shaving for about six months now. To be honest, he's not thrilled with the prospect of having to shave. He sees it as just one more hassle to deal with in the morning.

The doctors office called me back & I talked to the nurse. He prescribed a cream that he's too put on his face every night. He also has to stop using the 'Acne Free' 3 step skin care system, not because it's bad, but because the cream he prescribed also has benzoyl peroxide in it. He suggested that he use Ivory soap or Phisoderm instead. Also he suggested that I go ahead & get an oil free face moisturizer because his cheeks may get a little dried out.
We picked up the cream yesterday afternoon. It was $30, our ins co-pay wouldn't cover the entire cost. It's called 'Duac'. It has clindamycin 1%, which is a topical antibotic. And benzoyl peroxide 5%. No wonders he wanted us to not use the Acne Free.
I was going to get Ivory soap, but opted for the Phisoderm instead because it is more balanced. (Or maybe I'm a victim of advertising & it's not any better than Ivory)
I could only find a couple of oil free face mositurizers to choose from. One cost $16, then other $9. I wasn't happy about spending $9 (that cost more than what I use!) but I went ahead & bought it. I figured it's going to last him a long time.
Last night Quinn used the cream for the 1st time. I can already tell this morning that some of the new pimples (that popped up while he was at school) are not nearly as red or they are gone. Plus the one on his nose is a little bity place. At this rate, his skin is going to look a lot better tomorrow.
I'll let you know next week how it's working.
Hey, perhaps you can call Connor's doctor & talk to him about his skin problem. Quinn's ped doctor is the one that called in the Rx for us. He saved us a trip to the dermatologist.

As far as the shaving & Connor not being too excited, I imagine that Quinn's going to view it as another thing to do whenever he starts. Sometimes I catch him rubbing his index finger across the fuzz over his upper lip. LOL!
