I Was Wednesday Wondering....

Do you worry about your kids weight? Do you have kids on diets? Do you watch what your family eats and make sure they get enough excersise?

In a world were obesity in kids is quite high, what steps, if any, do you take to assure your child remains healthy?

This is a very touchy subject in my house. My DD 14 has gained alot of weight over the last year and she and I are supposed to start eating better and excercising more after the holidays. While discussing this my DD 12 has said that she is interested in joining us. So I guess it will be a family thing.
I hope to try some new fun recipes on everyone and we will see how that goes.
I plan on buying some fruit this weekend and cutting up for a fruit bowl in the fridge for snacks.
I am very interested in everyone's responses to this one!

My kids have always been good eaters - never a hard time about fruits, veggies, milk and don't overdo the junk food.

Luckily my kids are on the very skinny side (WISH I WAS TOO)! We've always been a very physically active family. DD plays volleyball and hikes in the mountains with the family. Also rides her bike all over the neighborhood. DS runs cross country and track and runs with dad on those mountain hikes. He's always moving, even in his sleep...don't let him know I told ya he has a railing on his loft bed because I'm still afraid he'll fall off in his sleep! My kids always been high energy, they find watching tv a waste of their time. As for food, they would eat nothing but junk if I let them. I don't moniter too much but I also don't buy tons of junk. I keep power bars, honey roasted nuts, salty nut bars...things like that. They do make cookies, cakes and brownies for dessert every night. For breakfast I buy SLimFast by the case and they drink one WITH thier breakfast every day for extra calories/protein during the athletic season at school. THey do like to take Ramen in a cup for lunch (I think it's gross) but they are quick to also grab fruit and bottled water. We don't do sodas except for the occasional treat. WHen my kids were really little I used to tell them that the candy in the check out aisle would give them a tummy ache so they didn't grow up 'expecting' treats like that. I think that's why they see candy bars as a rare treat instead of a daily staple in their diet.

I don't think you can ban them from certain foods, but you can control what comes into the house and kids learn by example. If you're up and moving, eating right..then that's usually what they'll do too!

Well, Sami's got no problems--she has gymnastics 16 hours a week, so no issues there!

I don't worry about Hannah...she is skinny and is active in sports. She does eat a lot (I mean at meals, not in between) so I do worry that if she ever stops being active she will gain weight---like I did. (Hopefully that won't be until college!!)

I do worry about my son. He is on the heavy side. His problem is that he is not very active. He doesn't really snack that much, and I do have healthy choices available, but he is just not into sports (except baseball in the summer). We bought a tread mill recently and he does do that a little. I think he is due for a growth spurt so maybe he'll stretch a little. That is what happened to my DH.

I do not really worry about this at all. with our genes its not really possible to get "fat". I do watch my dd just to see how she thinks about herself. I try to instill in her head that it does not matter what other people think it matters what you think. That seems to work. She does her own thing. I also do not have to worry about it too much my dd does not eat alot of junk food. She eats and loves healthy foods. And being a vegie. by choice not force works for her.

I do worry because I am heavy. But I don't say anything to her. I make sure I pack nutritious lunches that have all the food groups and I made dinners that include vegetables and a limited number of processed food. When she bugs me for a snack she's more likely to get a fruit, some cheese and ham than a bag of chips, although that's not forbidden. We have chips and candy in our house, but most of the time she's rather have a grilled cheese sandwich or some leftovers like potatoes and cawliflower.

So while i'm aware, I would NEVER put her on a diet because I think it only sets her up for a future of worrying about her weight. Now if she approached me and said she thought she was fat and wanted to diet, I would talk to her about more healthy eating and activity and I would help her made better choices, but I would not put her on
