Totally off subject...hair color

I'm sure that somewhere on I-Village there is a board for hair issues/coloring/etc...but I trust you ladies & thought I would be better off to post my question here. If you do your own hair coloring, what do you use? I've only had my hair professionally colored 2 or 3 times. I can't see (or afford) paying big bucks when I can do it myself & it looks almost as good. The only problem that I have is I have 2 areas of 50% gray (give or take a few %) on each side around my temples. I haven't been able to find a hair coloring product that will cover/bleac out the gray. Generally I go a couple of shades lighter than my current color. Nothing drastic. Sometimes the coloring will cover it for a week or so, then it fades...some products don't hardly cover it at all. I was at Walmart tonight & it is overwheming with all the choices. I didn't buy anything.
Any advice/tips???
Thanks!

Go to a Sally's beauty supply or someplace similar.

I color my hair all the time. I started going gray at 18 (thanks to those darn Scottish genes). I use L'oreal preference or excellence. They both cover gray well but will fade. Its the nature of the beast. Make sure you use a shampoo for colored hair and it will help. But I find its necessary to use a slightly darker color and give it a week to kind of settle down. I also have been buying a darker color and using a wide paint brush (of my DD's not used for walls LOL) to just "paint" the roots and the putting some darker "streaks" in, just sort of painting it down so the dark color blends into the lighter color. But you really just have to play around and try different colors and techniques. I choose a different color all the time.LOL I also found those 2-in-1 kits with the highlights fade much faster than the regular products.

Good luck. Just go for it and give it a whirl. Now I change the color so often people don't even notice. And if you hate it, give it a week and try another color. As long as you use a good conditioner your hair will be okay.

Thanks for the tip! There is a Sally's here in town. I'll try to get by there this afternoon. I didn't realize that they had hair color for one application. I thought it was in bulk or whatever. I've only been in one a couple of times.

Debi suggested that I check out Sally's. I'm going to get the 'Gray Magic' for sure. Maybe I'll end up getting that & adding it to L'oreal Pref or Excel as you suggested. I use regular shampoo & will pick up one made just for colored hair per your suggestion. I like to go lighter. I've tried darker but I look better with lighter hair. Not real blond, but sort of a med blond. I know the color that suits me best, but that darn gray is a *itch to cover! I've never used the 2-in-1 kits. Too expensive & I'm too tight. Thanks for the heads up on L'oreal Pref & Excel. I've used so many different brands, but can't remember if I've used that or not.

A note on the shampoos, do not use a clarifying shampoo of any kind it will strip the color right out. Also the now have shampoos that are tinted for certain haircolors and it helps your hair keep the color.

I have used alot of them out there and of the ones you buy at Walmart & such I have found that Revlon ColorSilk holds longer than most. But the ones you buy at Sally's are better than any others cause they are made for hairstylists to use.

Good luck & post a picture when you do color it.
