QOTW:(thank you to the board member who submitted this topic idea)
Music? What are your kids listening to? Do you know all the lyrics? Do you think they are important? Did you ever backtrack and not allow a certain artist or song into your home because of behaviors by the artist? Do you expose them to music outside of radio/mtv? Theater? Concerts? Opera? Musicals? Lessons?

How strict are you with the music your tween/teen listens too?

What are your kids listening to?

Right now its Hilary Duff, Aly & AJ, Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, Kelly Clarkson, Fallout Boy, various Top 40 stuff.

Do you know all the lyrics?

Most of them because I listen to the same things. I am not thrilled with Pussycat Dolls or Nelly Furtado's new stuff, not the Black Eyed Peas and Fergie, but she doesn't listen to it that much and I know its the music not the lyrics that get her, she doesn't really understand the lyrics unless they are blatent. I asked her about the Greenday song Holiday if she knew what it was about and she was clueless. It is not about a holiday. She also gets lectured by me from time to time about groups like the Pussycat Dolls who are basically made up and strippers who dance around and don't sing their own songs. So she knows my opinion on the matter. Whether it affects her or not, who knows.

Do you think they are important?

Within reason. I don't allow excessive swearing or anything sexually graphic, but implied sex I let go. Although I do hate songs that bleep out the swearing on the radio. Its just screws up the song. Either play it as is, or don't play it.

I am not Caitie's parent, but I will answer anyways because Caitie is REALLY into music. She listens to all songs, I really don't know how she hears them for the first time, maybe on the radio. But she picks up on them and learns the lyrics by heart, although she doesn't always understand what it means. She loves Ciara (who I can't stand!) but her mom wouldn't let her get the CD because one song talked about murdering and one of her family members was killed from a gunshot wound. So obviously its a sore subject in their house. She really likes any music, she knows every song out there and usually knows all the words. (which sometimes is worrying because many of the songs are more geared to older people and have more mature things, but it just goes right over her head).

Well, my kids and I listen to the same music. I do enjoy country music as well though and they are more into hip hop. But I do know all the song lyrics they listen to. I am pretty liberal about music but I do not allow explicit lyrics downloads. I get an email sent to me everytime my tween orders a song, and it tells me if it's clean or not. If it's not, he just wasted his money because I make him erase it. I realize that he knows not to say curse words but I still don't want him listening to them. Both of my boys have been exposed to just about every kind of music and we have gone to childrens musicals in the past. I couldn't pay them to sit through an opera though...but then again, I'm not into that either! LOL!

LOL at your comments about Usher....Rach doesn't think much of him at all. She basically does not like rap altho she does like Sean Paul which is reggae I think?

Since DH is a musician, we're pretty laid back w/music & for the most part Rach isn't into heavy/acid metal or the misogynist rap stuff. She listens to mostly Top 40 (Hannah Montana, Avril Lavigne, old Britster, Kelly Clarkson, some Beyonce dance tunes)but she likes some oldie stuff like the Beach Boys. She amazingly now likes Stevie Ray Vaughn since DH & I like bluesy stuff. He plays a lot of ecletic stuff, jazz, blues & classic rock so the girls let us know what little they like ;-)
