Hi, I'm new here. I have an 11 year old dd. I just took her in for her school physical and was offered the HPV vaccination (for my dd, not me). Do you think this is a bit young to be giving this since it's an STD??? I opted out for now mainly because i want to do more research on it since it's so new and I don't believe it's covered by insurance at this time, but I was just curious what anyone else thinks about this new vaccination and at what time it should be given.

I have to agree...... Jackie will not be getting it anytime soon. I know someone on here took their dd to get it......But i do not remember who... I want more research done on it and lots more time.

I pretty much second Nancy's post all the way. I have concerns about it period, but the fact that is it so new and there has been no long term research done on it makes me very leary to give to my daughter.

Hi Holly. This is something we've discussed on the board before and somewhere we had posted some links to more information.

IMHO, I think the HPV vaccination is a wonderful thing. My DD just turned 11 and I've talked to her Dr. about it. The ideal age is 11-13 before they become sexually active. (which is hopefully way beyond that, of course!) I'm holding off a year or so until a little more research is done and it covers more strains of the virus. It's not able to vaccinate against all the mutations of the HPV virus yet.

I think it's great! I would like to believe that all young girls will wait to be sexually active until they get married, but I unfortunately have a feeling that's not the case most of the time. We have to vaccinate our children against Hepatitis B, which is transmitted primarily through sex or using drugs through needles. The Hepatitis vaccination is one of the first vaccinations your child gets. I don't think it is telling your child that it is ok to have sex or that you are expecting them to either. If anything I think it should be looked at as an opportunity to educate them.

Hi! Thanks to all of you who replied...I do feel like it's not a bad idea to get vaccinated with this, but it's so new and she's so young. I also wasn't prepared for the battery of questions that followed from my daughter about the vaccination for cancer (which it's not), what's a cervix, how do you get it, etc...All good for conversation, just was not prepared. I joked around with my friends that I was just going to tell her that boys cause cancer and leave it at that (just kidding :-). In any case, I think I'll wait for right now and maybe talk to my ob/gyn about it too. Thanks for the input!

ITA w/Nancy & I even asked the girls ped about it when I took them in for their camp physicals. She said in light of the cost & the "newness" of the vaccination it'd be wise to wait esp since there is time.

My dd is 12 and is in the process of being vaccinated now. She's had 2 injections and goes in for the 3rd in 6 months. My feeling is protecting her is not giving her a license to go have sex. Its just saying JUST IN CASE. sexual activity is starting at younger and younger ages now and as much as I'd like to say my dd would never do that...you just never know! and her ped and his staff and my ob/gyn highly recommended it. I would rather her be protected just like I did with the chicken pox vaccination which came out to the US the year she was born.

Whoever brought up Hepatitis B vaccination...very good point!

I do not however think that this vaccination should be forced on anyone like some states have wanted to do. Its up to the family to decide what is best for them.
